🔊 LAUNCH ALERT: Understanding Dietary Behaviours Among Primary Sector Worker Communities in India Food and the practices around it form an integral part of our being. Our relationship with #food is often more than simple — it defines our existence, our cultural composition, and, most importantly, our health and wellbeing. However, the availability of "good" food is defined by various factors, including access, availability, affordability, awareness, and acceptability. Working with hard-to-reach communities across the country on micronutrient deficiencies, one of our key focus areas is to drive behaviour change around nutritious food and diets. This exploratory #study by Vitamin Angels India, supported by UNICEF India and conducted by Purple Audacity, aims to gather insights into 6 primary sector worker communities in India. The study sheds light on diets and behaviours and situations that frame it, including awareness, use of tech, market access, and others that impact consumption patterns among vulnerable communities. The study and its findings are a stark reminder of some of the basic things we take for granted, and highlights the urgent need for better nutrition information, especially among women and #children, and how tailored interventions may be a way forward. This International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, dive into the full study 👉 https://lnkd.in/gHBUJX29 Watch this space as we dive deep into specific communities every week as we go forward. Thrilled to present #TheDietStudy, an exploratory piece to understand dietary behaviours among primary sector worker communities in India. Understanding why people do what they do has always been a key area of interest for me and it's been an absolute gold mine, digging through this study and trying to understand consumption behaviours of underprivileged and marginalised communities and trying to join the dots. It's a stark reminder of so many things we take for granted. The study also highlights the way businesses have penetrated rural markets and taught local "Kirana" shops the basics of marketing to make sure that packaged foods slowly become an essential part of diets for everyone across the country- quite scary if you think about it! The study is a good starting point for development sector organisations to design initiatives that tackle basic problems of nutrition and food, while keeping the community at the core. Huge thanks to Shruti Menon and Ajaz Lone for pulling this piece together. I am witness to the massive effort that's gone into this study. #dietstudy #nutrition #consumption #food #marketequity #CSR #malnutrition #HealthforAll #CommunityHealth

India has made significant progress in enhancing the nutritional status of its population, achieving a 23.5% reduction in undernourishment over the last 15 years. Despite these impressive improvements, approximately 1 in 6 people in India remain malnourished, and 1 in 4 experience anemia. (Source: United Nations) Prabhat Nutrition - a project supported by Hindustan Unilever Limited, addresses these challenges, empowering communities to cultivate fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables at home. This initiative promotes dietary diversity, self-sufficiency, and improved nutrition for key beneficiaries such as pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls, and children. Through awareness campaigns on diversified food intake and the importance of macro and micronutrients, along with practical demonstrations of locally available food group recipes, the program engages thousands of community members. It equips them with the technical knowledge needed for planting, providing access to seeds, saplings, fencing, and pit development to ensure sustainable cultivation practices. Committed Nutrition Buddies - community nutrition volunteers, play a pivotal role by offering personalized counseling, organizing group meetings, and conducting cooking sessions to promote balanced diets and healthy eating habits. The impact is profound: Over 9,000 families have benefited, harvesting an average of 400 kg of vegetables annually. A special shout out to #HindustaUnileverLimited on their sustained support in nourishing the nation. Access, Availability and Affordability of food is a need for everyone, access to food addressing nutrition needs not everyone gets it. The food we consume daily is a great source to address our nutrition needs, what is important is whether everyone among us can get it - beyond subsistence. While interacting with the communities engaged in the primary sector (Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Tea/Coffee plantation, Salt pan and Brick kiln workers) it was clear that access, availability and affordability plays a huge role in what is consumed by these communities daily. While PDS provides access to food for millions of cardholders, it doesn't address the nutrition needs of these communities and hence diversifying 'what is on the plate' with an ability to pay becomes very important. Important to mention here, it goes worse for those who don't have access to PDS and don't get sufficient quantity of food (rice or wheat) if dependent on it. It's NOT hard to think about what could be the nutrition gaps for women and children in these communities and this study has been able highlight it quite well. There is more talk about it, happy to connect. Enjoy reading!

Social protection programs are vital in addressing nutrition issues in India by providing access to nutritious food, promoting healthy behaviors, enhancing healthcare services, and improving overall well-being among vulnerable populations. To discuss how India's Social Safety Net Programs (SSNPs) might advance nutritional gains further, Nutrition International organized an expert-led Consultation on February 29, 2024, in New Delhi. Mr. Parul Soni, Our Global Managing Partner, and Mr. Gaurav R Panday, Senior Vice President - Advisory Services, participated in the roundtable emphasizing on tested and conditional cash transfer models within the Public Distribution System that have evidence to improve nutrition status with a focus on nutritional outcomes. The insights that emerged from the discussion contributed towards enhancing the nutrition sensitivity of the current SSNPs.
