Meet Nico, Cellectric's electronics engineer!💡 Nico, 31, originally from Klagenfurt, has been calling Vienna home since 2013. He studied electrical engineering, IT and business and is an exceptional innovator. His impressive creations range from an autonomous maze-solving robot, a neural network trading bot and an air-purifying moss filter for indoor spaces. The latter was developed by a tech company that he founded, and which was funded by WA. Nico also launched an online tutoring service, where he personally tutored math and programming for all age groups. 🤖 Before diving into his career, Nico spent eight months volunteering in Uganda. Here, he oversaw community development projects (Bbanga Project) and even initiated a plastic recycling site on Kalangala Island, Lake Victoria. ♻ Now at Cellectric, his first official job, Nico enjoys the emphasis on creativity and openness. 💞 🏂 🎤 🏔 Outside of work, Nico’s list of hobbies is impressively long. A melodic death metal enthusiast, he was the singer for his band, Face of Disparity, and also wrote all the songs and music for the guitar and drums. He’s also an adventurer at heart, loving activities like hiking, kayaking, and snowboarding. He was a professional snowboarder and competed for Austria until he was 19, and also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching nearly 6,000 meters. Nico has a passion for photography and video production but isn’t much of a movie fan. He prefers TV series, with Arcane being his top pick. Fun fact: While in Uganda, Nico was given the name Mukasa, after the Balubale God who guards Lake Victoria, in honor of his environmental initiatives on the island. #biotechjobs #innovation #volunteering

In Sweden, Technology and School Join Forces Against Pollution. The SAMHE Web App is Born Schools are proving to be excellent environments for gathering ideas, analysis, and skills useful for the development of new forms of support, given the continuous technological innovation driven by companies and universities. Computer science, systems, and natural sciences are crucial elements for setting up devices, startups, ideas, and software development. There are numerous examples at the European level, including the Scandinavian Peninsula and the Baltic states, where the use of basic computer applications is implemented from an early age, not only to promote growth in logical-computational skills but also to understand the positive and negative effects of prolonged exposure to electronic devices. The active involvement of the student population generally yields positive results not only in terms of education but also in the pragmatic conception of technological solutions. In Stockholm, a primary school, in cooperation with researchers from local universities, has developed an app for active monitoring of air pollution, earning a prominent place in the local scientific landscape. Let's evaluate in detail how the school, both as an institution and as a place where the minds of the future reside, can be a functional element to contemporary technological innovation. The co-design process went through two phases: an initial design phase involving a smaller number of schools (over 20) and then a pioneering phase in which a larger number (120+) of schools tested the Web App and provided feedback. Students participated in co-design workshops with a teacher, both as a class group and as an extracurricular group during lunchtime or after school, such as a science club, a school council, or an eco-group. Arkwright Scholars, aged over 16, participated without teachers. It is fundamental that the SAMHE Web App was designed in collaboration with schools to maximize its acceptability within institutions and to ensure that teachers and students are involved. When I look at the kind of technology engineering produces in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and the USA, I continually ask, when will my beloved Nigeria get there? Each of these nations develop technologies to solve every problem they have. Here we are still battling with problems we created since independence. Of course, no one will do it for us except us. The solution must come from within. This is why we are focusing on improving science and engineering education to make it more pragmatic and focused on real world situations. Imagine engineering students initiating and executing projects while studying from 100-500 level which will prepare them to be employable and be able to employ others. Imagine engineering students gaining relevant and competitive skills and experiences while in school. These and more is what we intend achieving. We need your help to achieve these goals. We want to transform science education curriculum in senior secondary schools and engineering education in Polytechnics and Universities to align with our National Goal of productivity. A little over a year ago, I joined a fantastic STUDACT project, venturing beyond my usual research focus (ha-ha). When you conduct great research, you want to share it with other scholars and, hopefully, a broader audience. The 2024 conference season was my first in my new position. We kicked it off in March in Miami at the CIES annual meeting, combined with the STUDACT team meeting (four continents, six countries, countless wonderful people) — the same conference where I had previously presented my research on educational inequality. Now, I'm again studying inequality, though from a different angle. In July, we headed to Greece for the CESE conference. This was my first time attending, and I explored the conference to get a feel for the atmosphere and the themes discussed. I presented our research on migrant youth activism, this time from a European perspective. Once again, I felt connected to my previous work, where the comparative perspective was a lens I used to view the world. The season concluded with the recent ECER in Cyprus, another conference I'm quite familiar with. There, I presented our research on the methodology of comparative research. What could be closer to my heart than methodology and comparative combined? I've always had a keen interest in investigating how we can best study society. My PhD encompassed all three themes: comparative, methodology, and policy to address inequality. Doesn't this mean I'm in the right place?
