#TSMC’s C.C. Wei Declares No Interest in Acquiring #Intel’s Fab, Emphasizes ‘#AI is Real’ During #TSMC’s Q3 earnings call on October 17, Chairman C.C. Wei was asked about potential interest in acquiring Intel’s spin-off #IDM business. According to a report by TechNews, Wei provided a clear response with two emphatic "No's," signaling that TSMC has no plans to pursue the acquisition. Wei highlighted that a California-based #IDM has been a significant client, consistently placing large orders. Although he did not specify the company by name, industry experts largely believe the reference is to Intel. Additionally, analysts inquired about the sustainability of the current AI surge and whether #TSMC views it as a potential bubble. Wei firmly addressed these concerns, affirming that "AI is real." He emphasized that numerous large-scale cloud providers and AI innovators are actively partnering with TSMC. Furthermore, he noted that TSMC integrates AI and machine learning into its operations to enhance production capacity, create added value, and improve yield performance. SK hynix is making strides in next-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) to meet the growing demand for AI and high-performance computing. During Semicon Taiwan, SK hynix's Lee Kang-wook highlighted that their fifth-generation HBM3E, set for mass production in Q3, will soon be followed by the sixth-generation HBM4. This new iteration promises greater memory capacity, faster data speeds, and improved efficiency. With HBM demand projected to rise sharply, particularly in the generative AI market, SK hynix is advancing its packaging technologies, like mass reflow-molded underfill (MR-MUF), first introduced with HBM2E in 2019. The company also plans to strengthen partnerships with global tech leaders, including NVIDIA, Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet Inc., to reinforce its market position. These efforts underscore SK hynix's commitment to leading the HBM market, with projections showing an average market growth of 109% between 2022 and 2025. 🚀 AMD makes a strategic AI move with European acquisition! AMD has taken another significant step in its AI strategy by acquiring Helsinki-based Silo AI for $665m. This acquisition not only strengthens AMD's position in the AI market but also adds substantial expertise and some big-name enterprise customers to its portfolio. Silo AI, known as Europe's "largest private AI lab," will bring its 300 AI experts under the AMD umbrella before the year ends. The timing of this acquisition couldn't be more perfect. Silo AI's established relationships with leading companies such as Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever, alongside a development relationship with Nokia, are crucial additions. Peter Sarlin, Silo AI's CEO, will continue to lead the team, ensuring continuity and harnessing the full potential of this integration. Nishant Batra from Nokia has already expressed optimism about the enhanced AI capabilities this partnership promises. However, despite these advancements, industry experts like Richard Windsor caution that AMD still faces considerable challenges in dethroning Nvidia from its dominant position. While AMD's AI acquisitions, including the recent takeovers of Mipsology and Nod.ai, lay the groundwork for future growth, the development and market influence that Nvidia's platforms like Cuda have achieved are formidable barriers. Yet, with strategic steps and continuous innovation, AMD is positioning itself for long-term success in the AI sector. #AMD #ArtificialIntelligence #Telecoms

Jodi, thank you for sharing this great discussion! I found it particularly insightful when Jensen responded to your question on AI's impact on society: "If you have more ideas than you can afford to fund, then AI is your friend! Now if you are in an industry, a company or a person who’s out of ideas, then when AI comes and makes whatever you’re doing more productive, I can assure you, you will find a life of boredom!" This is specially relevant on a week where #AI was awarded two #NobelPrizes, one for how it helped in Protein design, and a second one only on how #physics helped in the design of #NeuralNetworks!
The Icon himself, Jensen Huang, Founder & CEO of NVIDIA joined our CEO Jodi Shelton on stage at this year’s U.S. Executive Forum for an exclusive and memorable Fireside Chat. During their discussion, they explored GSA’s 30-year journey, NVIDIA’s role in driving the #AI revolution within the semiconductor industry, and what lies ahead for the future of technology. Jensen, thank you for your unwavering support of GSA and the profound impact you've had on the entire industry. We’re eager to see what groundbreaking innovations you’ll bring next. Abrdn's James Thom recently spoke to Ausbiz, where AI was a key theme. "Taiwan Semiconductor or TSMC is one of our largest holdings that's benefiting from this AI thematic as well being one of the largest chip makers globally” We like some of the Korean memory players as well and have been looking at some of the smaller or mid-cap names in Taiwan that are providing componentry into the semiconductor value chain that are also seeing an uplift in demand as a result of this AI theme." With giants like #TSMC, #PSMC, #MediaTek, and #Realtek, Taiwan's world-renowned #semiconductor industry is ready for the next step. Since 2023, Taiwan Executive Yuan has approved the Taiwan Chip-based Industrial Innovation Program (CBI Program) and earmarked a total of NT$300 billion (US$9.22 billion) for the program's implementation between 2024 and 2033. The program's first phase will last for five years and focus on leveraging Taiwan's leading global position in chip manufacture, packaging and testing to develop innovative new applications through integrating silicon chips with critical technologies such as generative AI. The CBI Program not only aims to enhance Taiwan’s semiconductor advantages and foster global semiconductor ecosystem development but also enable Taiwan to secure its technological strength over the next 10 years and spur on the pace of breakthrough innovation across multiple industries. It helps secure Taiwan’s position as a global hub for semiconductor startups as it provides computational resources, data, models, and access to local industry experts across diverse domains, empowering startups worldwide.
