🌟As we wrap up Phase Two of the #ChangingChildrensChances ⛅ project at Centre for Community Child Health, we are reflecting on our achievements over the past nine years. 🌟 ✅ We’ve developed a new framework to understand the factors shaping children’s health, development and wellbeing. This framework helps identify inequities and opportunities to take action. ✅ We’ve used innovative ways to analyse existing data to test stacked interventions and identify which combinations of interventions work best to reduce inequities. ✅We show that stacked interventions reduce child inequities. By simultaneously addressing factors across families, communities and policies, we can improve outcomes like reading skills, mental health and physical health. ✅ We’ve empowered decision makers with evidence that can inform more precise and effective policies to address child inequities – ensuring limited public funds are directed towards opportunities that will achieve maximum impact. This event delved into the impact of non-inclusive research on Equity-deserving communities, highlighted practical aspects of inclusive research & community engagement, and examined the intersectionality of childhood disability and racial identity/ethnicity in Canada. Dr. Bukola Salami, RN, PhD launched our event by emphasizing EDI & an intersectional lens in child health research. Canada's wealth contrasts with child poverty and environmental neglect, prompting the need for inclusive research, community engagement, and an EDI Action Plan. The next session on inclusive research & community engagement from the POPCORN network discussed the importance of commitments to EDI & anti-racism, challenges in health equity training for academics, and the importance of co-designing studies with communities. In the final session, we explored vital aspects including team diversity, respectful engagement, and the impact of intersectionality on child health outcomes. The takeaways were valuable EDI principles, practical tips, and resources for advancing child health equity through research. Don't miss our final session in our series on March 28: Evidence-informed Policy: Advancing health equity for all children. Great to see this collaborative scoping review on health visiting for children under five, now published in Primary Health Care Research & Development. https://lnkd.in/gHHbK7Ag This review explores key priorities for improving services, with insights from parents and professionals, highlighting how health visiting supports families, the challenges faced, and what’s needed to better understand its impact. At Care City, we were proud to undertake consultations with parents, ensuring their voices and lived experiences helped shape the study’s priorities. The review explores how policymakers, funders and research teams can better mobilise to build the evidence base for early years services—critical for supporting families and young children. A big thank you to all stakeholders, researchers and parents involved in this important work. "If you're an Autistic person, your access to, or levels of support, depend on your postal code, and it shouldn't be that way," says Dr. Mackenzie Salt, lead researcher of the Canadian Autistic Adult Needs Assessment Survey. Recently, our Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Mackenzie Salt, met with Katherine Singh, Yahoo Style, to discuss the findings from Part 1 of the Canadian Autistic Adult Needs Assessment Survey. This research project represents the first survey focused on understanding the real-life needs of Autistic adults in Canada. "Give me a child until he is seven, and I will show you the foundations of the man." – Aristotle “This timeless truth remains critical today. The first few years of life are vital in shaping health and well-being, yet health inequalities in the UK continue to rise.” Our director of health, Rukshana Kapasi, and Raj Jain, chair of NHS Cheshire & Merseyside ICB, co-authored this article 📰 https://brnw.ch/21wOFcR on why prevention is so important when it comes to children’s health. “Too many children face poverty, poor nutrition, and limited access to care, while crisis intervention costs continue to climb. “Research shows that early intervention works. The Sure Start programme’s long-term impact on children’s health proves that proactive support can reduce future health costs. At Barnardo’s, we’ve found that every £1 invested in family support can save £2.60 for the state. “Initiatives like the Child Health Equity Collaborative in Cheshire & Merseyside are making real strides by involving children in decision-making and addressing social health determinants, such as literacy and school readiness. “To build a healthier, more prosperous future, we must shift our focus to prevention, not just intervention.” #ChildHealth #HealthEquity #PreventionMatters #FutureGenerations

We had a meaningful time last month launching the Technical Advisory Board of the new "Social Norms & Adolescent Evidence Review" initiative, supported by and in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. With insight from this technical advisory board of social norms experts from the US, UK, DRC, Nigeria, Kenya, and India, we're asking what the existing evidence says about.. ❓ ...the relationship between normative contexts of adolescent girls and young women and outcomes related to SRH, economic empowerment, GBV, and child early and forced marriage? ❓ ...the effectiveness of norms-shifting programming and the way media and faith-based approaches influence social norms? At our first meeting, the advisory board was able to: ✅ Introduce and launch the technical advisory board ✅ Introduce the project and the #GenderNorms Learning Agenda ✅ Gather inputs from advisory board members on scoping review protocol (methodology, outputs, project’s goals) ✅ Set expectations for advisory board membership ✅ Share info on upcoming project activities and determine how the advisory board can engage Learn more about this work: https://lnkd.in/eb--Tuhf #socialnorms #gendernorms #SRH #childmarriage #GBV __ CC: Population Media Center, BBC Media Action, Save the Children US, The George Washington University- Milken Institute School of Public Health, University at Buffalo, Aspen Institute New Voices Fellowship, Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, Policy Innovation Centre, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, PCI India, University of Southern California, Tearfund, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Health Visions
