EU ETS 2, covering fuel combustion in buildings, road transport and small-scale industrial installations, is set to start in 2027. But a plethora of questions remain with regards to the implementation of the system. As such, I was very pleased to join the second roundtable on ETS2 organized by European Energy Exchange AG. An excellent opportunity to exchange with financial institutions, compliance actors and analysts on critical aspects of the system. Nemo Link welcomes a newly published and insightful report from Frontier Economics and its partners on linking UK and EU carbon markets. This report not only emphasizes the advantages linking the UK and EU ETS to potentially secure an exemption from burdensome #EUCBAM requirements and costs, but also the benefits of #efficienttrade and cost-effective climate goal achievement through the linking of carbon markets.   Nemo Link has previously raised concerns that the additional friction in #UK-EUpower trade is likely to be created since EU CBAM may not accurately reflect GB carbon costs, including counter-intuitive outcomes for renewables, and would support a solution such as #ETSlinkage, where the UK and EUs mutual efforts to #decarbonise are recognised.   Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e_KMgBuc

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from Türkiye to our headquarters in Leipzig for an exchange on national emissions trading systems. During this exchange, we shared EEX’s expertise developing carbon markets and providing the EU ETS common auction platform for EU member states. The #Türkiye delegation provided an overview of the country’s progress in developing its national ETS. Emissions Trading Systems worldwide: a growing market 💰🔜 The graph from the 2024 International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) annual report highlights the increasing global revenue achievements from Emissions Trading Systems (#ETS). Taken from this year’s edition of the Status Report on ETS worldwide, illustrates how carbon markets have generated substantial financial outcomes, reaching USD 74 billion in 2023 alone and accumulating nearly USD 303 billion since 2007. 💶📈 Key findings from the report: ·      🇪🇺 The EU continues to lead revenue generation with the EU ETS raising USD 47 billion in 2023, showcasing the EU’s strong commitment to carbon pricing. ·      🇩🇪 Germany is a remarkable case as it added USD 11,560.0 million to its contribution to the #EUETS through national enhancements.  ·      🇬🇧 The UK contributes USD 5.2 billion, similarly in the US 🇺🇸 California's system with USD 4.7 billion, while the RGGI USD 1,2 billion ·      Several jurisdictions have introduced new systems or expanded existing ones, including 🇺🇸 Washington, 🇦🇹 Austria, and the 🇰🇷 Republic of Korea.    Global momentum is growing as 14 new ETSs are under development, including in countries such as #Türkiye🇹🇷, #Vietnam🇻🇳, and #Colombia🇨🇴. These efforts highlight the increasing trend toward emissions reduction in light of the EU’s strong commitment to implementing the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM). As CBAM progresses, other nations may find even more reasons to accelerate their climate commitments through market-based solutions. To better align the emissions trajectory of China’s power sector with the country’s neutrality target for 2060, China’s national Emission Trading System (ETS) needs to be enhanced. Hongyu Zhang, Heng Liang, Da Zhang, Junling Huang, and Xiliang Zhang (Tsinghua University) find that introducing auctions into an output-based ETS can reduce emissions with a limited increase in cost and lead to a more diversified technology mix.
