We need to work together to speed up solutions to urgent health challenges.     That’s why we’re partnering with the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on a $300 million initiative to help build a healthier future for everyone.    It will focus on three critical areas:    1. The impact of climate change on health  2. Infectious disease  3. The interaction between nutrition, immunity, development and disease    “We face huge challenges to protecting and improving physical and mental health, compounded by vast inequities globally,” says John-Arne Røttingen, CEO of Wellcome.    Through this partnership, “we can raise ambition, and combine resources and networks to find new ways to advance global health research—especially for those with greatest need”.    Read more: https://lnkd.in/eZ7f2dGV

On May 16-17, I had the pleasure of attending the Asia Summit on Global Health (ASGH) held in Hong Kong, SAR. This annual conference brings together leaders, innovators, and pioneers in global health in East Asia and Asia Pacific. These professionals included change-makers invited from several sectors including health tech, clinical medicine, academia, pharmaceuticals, and business to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration toward shared goals. Of particular excitement was the coinciding of ASGH 2024 with Hong Kong’s third International Healthcare Week. During this week hundreds of healthcare professionals flock to Hong Kong to participate in an array of healthcare conferences, seminars, and networking events. The theme of ASGH 2024 was Innovation, Inclusion, and Impact with particular emphasis on the foremost. The impact of the massive technological advancements of the last two decades was evident in the innovations and novel directions spoken about in the many conference sessions. The many distinguished conference speakers included Nobel laureate Professor Roger D. Kornberg, PhD who discussed current research and applications of emerging autonomous devices in clinical settings. Here are some key takeaways from the event: 𝗔𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆: Our lifespan is increasing, but our health span has not expanded as rapidly. Although we as a global society are, on average, living longer than ever before, longevity has not increased proportionately to increases in life expectancy. We have a “pandemic of inactivity” pervasive in the culture of aging, leading to frailty and a host of chronic illnesses as we age. 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: There was no shortage of discussion of AI at this year’s conference with this topic finding its way into nearly every session from global mental health to precision genomic medicine. ASGH panelists discussed the applications of AI in diagnosing, assessing, and predicting the outcomes of cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮: Considering the prevalence of dementia is on the rise, with younger onset dementia expected to nearly double by 2054, it was fascinating to learn about the current status of research and advancements being made in that field. Some highlights from these sessions included a novel blood test to detect Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and AI-powered tools to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases. The research team at Université Laval is addressing a wide range of global health and wellbeing challenges, from chronic diseases to mental health conditions. Global health faces complex challenges, including rising chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions and cancer, alongside persistent threats from infectious diseases. Socio-economic disparities hinder access to quality healthcare for vulnerable populations, while climate change and environmental degradation contribute to the spread of emerging and vector-borne diseases. Mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression, have also intensified due to global crises like COVID-19. Solving these urgent issues requires the combined expertise of leading research institutions worldwide. In response, Université Laval, located in Québec City, Canada, addresses these global and regional health challenges through an interdisciplinary research model focused on societal impact and strengthened by international partnerships. Over 500 professors from numerous faculties conduct research at Université Laval’s renowned affiliated health centres, including the Québec Heart and Lung Institute Research Centre (CRIUCPQ), the CERVO Brain Research Center, and North America’s largest francophone health research centre, the Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval (CRCHUQ-UL). Their internationally-recognised work spans a vast range of health fields – cardiology, oncology, respiratory health, infectious diseases, mental health, and public health – placing Université Laval at the forefront of addressing urgent health issues worldwide.
