It’s 16 years since I visited ORGATEC Cologne, the European contract furniture expo. So what’s changed in that time? 1. It’s smaller (Sandra Gritti and I covered the whole thing in 15,000 steps) 2. The dress code 🫣 Less suits more sneakers! 3. So many phone booths. Stand after stand after stand 🥱. One-person booths. Two-person booths. Cozy booths for six (I think HR might have an issue with the amount of physical contact needed to fit six people in there). And a consistent lack of understanding for video call camera angles 😩 4. An overwhelming lack of innovation. If this is the general pace of innovation amongst the brands present, I can probably leave it another 16 years to visit again. Notable exceptions? Toni Piskac’s work for Visplay for exploring adaptability, flexibility, personalisation and future readiness Tobias Jähner at Florafilt Luftreiniger GmbH for smart integration of air quality and biophilia And SLALOM Acoustic & Partition Systems for bringing real meadow flowers into their products. Sustainable exhibition stand design: Berlin-based IT service provider syspro started 4 years ago with a modular exhibition stand from Modulap with 16 sqm stand space. Since then, syspro and the Berlin-based agency sense:ability have continuously expanded the stand. All elements are being re-used and re-combined depending on the required stand layout. At this year's EUROCIS 2024, syspro and the RFID Network presented a multi-functional, multimedia brand space on a stand area of 144 sqm, set up much faster than comparable exhibition stands, with an integrated transport system and without avoidable waste.
