Research into the activation of CB2 receptors in pets has shown significant promise for managing inflammation. When CB2 receptors are stimulated, primarily in immune cells, they initiate a cascade that reduces the production of pro-inflammatory molecules. This modulation of the immune response can alleviate symptoms associated with inflammation, such as pain and swelling, making it a promising target for managing conditions like arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and other chronic inflammatory disorders in pets. The Pet Pharmaceuticals group is focused on proving, through clinical research, the importance of phytocannabinoids in the veterinary prescribing cascade. By demonstrating both efficacy and safety, we aim to provide scientifically-backed phytopharmaceutical options designed to improve the quality of life for pets. Our proprietary formulation, targeting inflammation, is undergoing trials in the UK to establish its therapeutic value for veterinary medicine. ★NEW STUDY ALERT★ Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a common autoimmune skin disease in dogs. Conventional treatments, such as corticosteroids, can be effective but often have side effects. A recent study published in @frontiersin Veterinary Science presents a successful use of cannabinoid therapy (CT) in a dog with DLE resistant to conventional treatment. A 2-year-old mixed-breed dog with a history of DLE presented with worsening lesions despite treatment with corticosteroids and other medications. Liver enzyme levels were elevated, indicating corticosteroid-induced side effects. CT with a CBD-rich full spectrum Cannabis oil was initiated. The dosage was gradually adjusted until the minimum effective dose was found. The dog significantly improved skin lesions and liver enzyme levels within a few weeks of starting CT. After 1 year, the dog remains clinically stable on a low dose of full-spectrum CBD-rich oil. No evidence of DLE recurrence was observed. This case suggests that CT may be a viable alternative or complementary therapy for DLE in dogs, particularly for those experiencing adverse effects from conventional treatments. Further research is warranted to confirm the efficacy and safety of CT for DLE management in dogs. (Photo by @theredfoxphotographer)

- Feline Infectious Perotinitis (FIP) - As alarming and dangerous as it sounds it has become quite ubiquitous and is now somewhat treatable with advancement and research in veterinary medicine. - A stray cat presented with severe abdominal distention was presented, having normal vitals and mild lethargy after beign disappeared for several days from home where the cat used to eat, as reported by the owner. - After physical exam we went for the, xrays, cbc, chemistry, - Abdomenocentasis, and based on our suspection the Rivalta test. - Xrays showed fluid filled abdomen with no demarcation of any abdominal organ and fluid present in the lungs with the right lung being more involved - Cbc showed mild Leucocytosis, neutrophilia and lymphopenia Chemistry was not a typical one, with normal ALB, GLOB & ALB/GLOB ratio, with increased T-Bil only. - On Abdomenocentasis, the fluid was typical gold/yellow color - Rivalta test was a positive, unfortunately we could not run a kit test. - Treatment was initiated with supportive IV fluids, antibiotics, multivitamins, liver support & the experimental drug Remdesivir@10mg/kg - A proper treatment protocol was set in place and the cat showed remarkable recovery and more than 95% of the fluid was gone after 30 days. - P. S, the cat weighed 5kg at the beginning of treatment and the cat's weight at day of discharge was 3.8kg

There are publications....and there are Publications. This one is special for many reasons. Will we say in future: "Remember the times we could only treat them with insulin injections and had to monitor for dangerous hypoglycaemia?"; "Remember the times that 1 in 3 would be euthanised at time of diagnosis instead of treated?". A true collaborative project of >15 years by colleagues in first, second, third opinion practice, university and pharmaceutical industry. Many small steps by many people, for the right reasons - a giant leap for veterinary medicine #gamechanger #veterinary #veterinarymedicine #diabetes #endocrinology #humbled https://lnkd.in/e3YaA8_t

⏰️ Do your part to fight AMR, every bit helps! 🥊 ❌️ AMR is here to stay, but we can all make a difference! ❌️ Antibiotics are still commonly used to treat acute diarrhoea in dogs ❌️ Several studies have shown that there is no clinical benefit in using antibiotics above nutraceuticals or placebo in these patients. #AMR #VETERINARY

2 easy steps to reduce blood transfusion reactions in our dog patients: A recent study in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine reveals that 8.9% of dogs receiving packed red blood cells (pRBC) suffer from transfusion reactions (TRs). Risk factors include using older blood, especially after 28 days, and transfusing larger volumes of pRBC, which can heighten the chances of severe febrile or hemolytic reactions. To mitigate these risks: 1. Calculate the necessary pRBC volume based on factors like the reason for anemia, current regeneration, the size and PCV of the recipient, and the PCV of the donor blood. 2. Utilize fresher pRBCs for transfusions whenever possible. #SAMEhubet #BloodTransfusion #CanineCare
