At TDS Trucking Training & Technology and the Edward & Ruth Brooks Sr Foundation, we stand for empowering individuals through education, workforce development, and apprenticeship training. Our mission is to break down economic barriers and provide opportunities for those who need it most, including youth (ages 16-24), young adults exiting foster care, the justice-involved, the formerly incarcerated, veterans, and women seeking to enter non-traditional jobs. We are focused on serving underserved and distressed communities by offering pathways to meaningful, sustainable employment. Each week, we will highlight specific groups we aim to support. We will explore the barriers they face and how our programs address those challenges. Today, we’re highlighting youth (ages 16-24). Many of these young individuals are struggling with access to education and job opportunities. They often face barriers such as poverty, lack of guidance, inadequate skill development, and limited career options. These challenges can hinder their ability to break the cycle of economic disadvantage. Through our YouthBuild program, we provide these youth with a chance to gain industry-recognized certifications and hands-on training. This program empowers them with the skills needed to secure high-paying jobs, giving them a clear pathway to success and stability. By investing in their future, we aim to build stronger communities and change lives for the better. Stay tuned as we continue to highlight the communities we aim to serve and share how we’re making an impact! Join us in our mission to save our youth.

I probably shouldn't write when I'm angry... But when those from a traditional educator preparation background dump on alternative certification programs, painting them all as (excuse the unprofessional term here) "crappy," I can't stay silent. Not everyone has the time or resources to go back to school or student teach (without pay, for 4 months) in order to start teaching. Some very promising programs hire people as teacher aides or paraprofessionals as they work towards teaching certificates, but the pay won't support a family. Asynchronous online programs attract a diverse group of people to teaching. People who didn't think they would be able to fulfill their dream of becoming a teacher because of family and financial obligations find they can complete coursework on their lunch break or after they've put the kids to bed. Being convenient doesn't take away from its quality. I have dedicated my career to educational equity, and well-prepared teachers are key to that aim. As a principal, I often hired alternatively certified candidates and was happy to have them. They were dedicated, passionate individuals who were fired up about teaching. At least 2 of the past 6 Teachers of the Year in Texas are products of alternative certification programs. It takes all kinds of programs - traditional, residency, apprenticeship, and alternative - to fill our classrooms with effective teachers. We can all learn from one another and support each other in this work. There is no one "magic bullet" that will solve the #teachershortage problem. But we can't circle the wagons and shoot inward.

This week's Trainer Tip comes from Tom Fraser! "Have you thought of using overnight or weekly activities with your groups? They can reinforce reflection and encourage engagement in your learners. 1. Think about the audience. Are they Cert III apprentices? If so, a two hour research project is probably inappropriate. Maybe your learners could write some notes (or a photo) of a job that went well, and one they could have improved on. 2. Create activities that align with your classroom learning, and the needs of the group. Help support "vocational training" by encouraging learners to go and use the skills and knowledge they pick up in the classroom (if it is safe to do so of course!) Give it a try. By providing context for your cohort you may find some unexpected results." To learn more about our team of highly experienced trainers and assessors, head to: https://lnkd.in/gTRGpDKi RTO: 32371

Me: "I'd like to train as a SEN teacher so that i can become a specialist Dyslexia teacher or a SENCo later on in my career. Them: "Wait a year because the governors wont support anything until you've been here for a year. We currently also have no need of an additional teacher. Them: "We've failed to recruit a third SEN teacher for your unit". Me: " i've been here for a year now and you have need of a third teacher, will you support me through apprenticeship training?" Them: "No. We want you to continue doing the job of a teacher (that I've been doing for a year) without being trained or recognised as a teacher until we can recruit a new teacher. We will increase your salary and hours to reflect the pay and hours that you should have been working last year. Oh, and we've extended your contract even though you said you weren't sure if you wanted to stay on". Me: "I've got interviews for PGCE and if I get accepted, I will be leaving to train as a teacher. I would have loved to train with you and keep helping you out". Them: "well if we failed to recruit a teacher for 2025 then we may offer you the opportunity to train". Me: "I can't wait around for maybes". It shouldn't be like this. Why are we as employees doing everything we can to accommodate our employers when they don't do the same for us? Am I doing the right thing?
