💡 I dropped out of studying Medicine at university, had no clue what I wanted to do, and earned the prestigious title of "Family Disappointment of the Year"... But here’s the thing: even if you’re not sure where you’re headed, a path WILL unfold for you. #WomenInTechWeek feels like the perfect moment for me to share how a winding path can still be a path to success and why we need more women in tech. 💻✨ *So what happened?* After dropping out of doing Medicine, I switched to studying Natural Sciences (bio, chem, maths, and economics)—clearly still unsure of my life’s direction. It wasn’t until my computer-heavy master’s that I realised my interest in tech. One of my first roles in the industry was at Calastone, a FinTech, where I worked across Operations, Technology, Client Delivery, and the Commercial team—getting a 360° view of the business. That experience laid the foundation for everything that came after. And that was just the start. I’ve grown by constantly learning and surrounding myself with great mentors—brilliant women like Kate Webber, Laura Mann , Lorna Glynn and more recently, Lauren Hayes and Kelly Mathieson, who have guided me and continue to guide me through key moments in my career. Moving through different roles helped me gain a deep understanding of the tech behind financial services. Now, as Director of Presales at Jaid, I get to work with AI to drive digital transformation for financial institutions using all the skills I've learnt over the years. Being not only a woman in tech, but also a Black woman, all while managing a bipolar disorder, has brought its fair share of challenges. It’s been a journey of resilience and I’ve often leaned into my community for support. But every challenge brings a unique perspective that I’m proud to use my voice and my platform to share. *Ok, ok, Chim, but how do we support more women in tech???* We need to focus on mentorship, flexible work policies, and intentional diversity at the leadership level. It’s not just about creating a seat at the table—it’s about making sure everyone has a voice. *Chim’s Top Tip* Build your tribe. Seek mentors. And always remember—you belong in every room you step into. #womenintech #womenintechweek #fintech #technology #womeninstem #DEI #diversity #inclusion #wearetechwomen Thank you WeAreTechWomen for encouraging me to share my story!
Very impressive Chimmy. For the record nearly 50 years ago I earned that same prestigious (Family) title when I left officer training in the Royal Australian Navy to pursue a career in finance. Onward and upward .... 😀
