Warrior Games 2024 is getting closer! Let's introduce you to Team Army member (Ret.) SPC Brent Garlic. Meet retired SPC Brent Garlic. He served 2 years before his injury during the pre-9/11 era. Garlic would describe his injury as an alien abduction. He has very limited memory of the day before, no memory of the incident, and awakened out of his coma a few days later in this new body. Life as he knew it had been completely changed. People typically don't realize how much life changes when you lose walking ability. Accessibility to homes, cars, or businesses become extremely limited. Opportunities for employment, relationships or even health improvement are extremely challenging. The lifestyle sacrifices seem to be almost boundless. Upon the discovery of adaptive sports, life has taken on a new meaning. SPC Garlic was in such a dark hole of doubt and aimlessness. 4 years after Brent's injury, he stumbled upon wheelchair sports and it open his eyes to another world. The adaptive sports community is filled with thousands of individuals who are dealing with the same obstacles that he faces daily. Just when he thought that it couldn't get any better, Brent stumbled across Warrior Games. The DoD found a way to merge adaptive sports with service men and women across the country. It is the best way to remain connected to his family-in-arms as well as learn to adapt and grow through adaptive sports. If it weren't for retired Staff Sargent Robert Jones of Atlanta, GA., he probably still wouldn't have heard about these amazing military programs. #Relationism “emphasize the connection between players and their environment”. “Coaches who embrace relationism encourage players to read the game, make decisions based on the relationships they observe and exploit the spaces and opportunity that arise”. Here some examples of combinations that can emerge through the relationist approach. After many passing drills to focus on technical skills, we started developing combinations that link 3 or 4 players to get through. Typical example is playing forward with one player, playing back with another, then either the first one or a third player will play through to another one. This kind of play moves the defense forward in the first part, leading to space in behind when the final pass is played.
