UK energy company Centrica has completed the acquisition of a 16 MW solar farm and a co-located 3 MW battery energy storage system in Dorset, England. Centrica acquired the development rights for the two clean energy projects near Winterborne Whitechurch, which is scheduled to break ground in early 2024, with a view to export first power to the grid in 2025. Once online, Centrica’s new projects will be capable of powering 4,600 homes per annum, while the BES component will be able to deliver two hours of energy. “Solar will play an increasingly important role in the UK as we strive for a net zero energy system,” said Gregory McKenna, BSc, MBA, CDir, FIoD, Managing Director of Centrica Business Solutions. “We’re proud to be leading the charge in delivering a bank of assets across the UK that will help meet the need for clean energy generation and storage.” The new deal also forms part of Centrica’s plan to invest between £600 million to £800 million per annum until 2028 in renewables generation. Centrica recently acquired the 13 MW Roundponds Solar Farm in Wiltshire, which was commissioned in 2015. Sue Peart, Commercial Director of Centrica Energy Assets, added: “As the UK strives towards net zero, on-shore renewable power generation will play an essential role in delivering a secure supply of energy to homes and businesses. “The recent grid reforms announced by Ofgem are welcome news, but to unlock the full potential of renewable energy, we need to go further. This year will be pivotal for the energy industry – boosting capacity and prioritising the transmission network will be central to creating a grid fit for the future, and one that can manage the transition to net zero.” #cleanenergy

Equitix has acquired a portfolio of two hybrid renewable energy projects in Spain. The portfolio includes two operational wind farms, one in Castilla-y-Leon and the other in Castilla-la-Mancha, both with co-located hybrid solar PV developments, and a battery storage project that has received a grant from the Spanish government. The newly acquired solar PV and battery storage assets will be constructed on the same sites as the existing wind farms, which aims to maximise grid capacity usage and leverage the complementary energy generation profiles of wind and solar PV. "This acquisition is a clear demonstration of our commitment to supporting the green transition and further evidence of our ability to deliver our European core fund strategy being ahead of the market by investing in one of the few multi-technologies hybridised projects in Europe," said Achal Bhuwania, CIO at Equitix. "Our experience as a major investor in renewable energy and energy storage, complemented by our dedicated team in Spain was pivotal to our success in originating and completing this deal.” The acquired projects will contribute an additional 226 MW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid and are expected to prevent 92,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. #cleanenergy

In July 2024, Australia saw significant growth in its renewable energy project pipeline, with 6 GW of new battery capacity leading the expansion. Research from Rystad Energy highlighted that 21 new large-scale solar, wind, and energy storage projects were added, totaling 9.6 GW of capacity. While this was less than the 28 GW added in the previous month, the battery storage sector remained robust, contributing over 60% of the new capacity. This surge in battery projects underscores the technology's critical role in Australia's transition to renewable energy, as the country aims to reach its 82% renewable energy target by 2030. Alongside the battery developments, 1.7 GW of new solar PV and 2 GW of onshore wind projects were also announced. Queensland led in new developments with 2.6 GW, including notable solar and battery projects, followed by Victoria and South Australia. British-owned Pacific Green was a key player, advancing two major battery projects in Victoria and South Australia. Despite challenges, investor interest in Australia's renewable energy market remains strong. #EnergyStorage #Australia #OdinGlobal https://lnkd.in/e3seKJ6N
