It was fantastic to be at Piccadilly Circus early this morning for Purple Tuesday’s takeover of the Piccadilly Lights, turning them purple for disability. Purple Tuesday is a global initiative dedicated to improving accessibility and the disabled customer experience. This year the focus is #ThinkAccessibility, sending the message that inclusion and accessibility matters, and challenging businesses to consider the experience of disabled customers at all points of the customer journey. There are 1.3 billion disabled people in the world, that’s 17% of the population. Is your business unintentionally excluding them through inaccessible products and services? Today was a powerful reminder that together we can make an impact. But the accessibility and inclusion message must stretch far beyond a single day. As an industry we must remember that technology can include or exclude. We need to come together to push for real and continued action, creating products and services that are fully inclusive for all. Its too important to say ‘its someone else’s job.’ It’s on all of us. Congrats to Mike Adams, Charlene Overend and all the Purple Tuesday team for a fantastic purple takeover and the movement’s continued impact. Let’s all #ThinkAccessibility. I'm still seeing large, well-known corporations using stoplight color schemes in their data dashboards. Even when I say that's inaccessible, they tell me it's so entrenched in their company culture that they can't address it (yet). Even though it violated the Americans with Disabilities Act! 🌍 Representation Matters Especially When It Comes To Toys 🎨 In today’s global market, taking a diverse lens to product creation isn't just a trend—it’s a necessity. This is especially true in the toy industry, where the products we create shape the minds and imaginations of the next generation. 💡 Diverse Toys, Diverse Minds: Toys play a crucial role in children’s development, influencing how they see themselves and others. Shockingly, research shows that only 15% of toys feature characters with disabilities, and a mere 10% of toys are designed to represent diverse ethnic backgrounds. When toys reflect a wide range of cultures, abilities, and experiences, they help children develop empathy, inclusivity, and a broader worldview (World Economic Forum) (Annenberg School). 📊 The Business Case for Diversity: Companies that embrace diversity in product design see up to 19% higher innovation revenue. This isn't just about doing the right thing—it’s about tapping into a broader market and meeting the diverse needs of consumers. In fact, 75% of consumers are more likely to support brands that reflect their own values and experiences, making diversity a clear competitive advantage (World Economic Forum) (UW-Milwaukee). 👩🏾🦽 Representation in Toys: Despite progress, there is still a significant gap in the representation of different races, genders, and abilities in toys. With 67% of parents saying they struggle to find toys that reflect their child’s identity, the demand for more inclusive products is clear. BY SHUTTING ME OUT… YOU ARE CLOSING THE DOOR ON OPPORTUNITIES FOR *YOU*? As a shop owner or store manager, do you realise how much accessibility and inclusion matters to *you*? Making somewhere accessible and inclusive doesn’t just benefit the people that have disabilities. Have you ever stopped to consider that if your business isn’t accessible, then there could be a whole load of potential customers that *you* are missing out on? You might not realise, but your business premises or shop floor might look attractive for potential customers, but on the other hand it could also be packed full of barriers for customers with disabilities… perhaps different barriers for different types of disabilities. I don’t think I would be mistaken to assume that when talking about accessibility, most people probably think of things like; if there are steps/stairs, is there a lift and is there an accessible toilet? But, accessibility and inclusivity go far, far deeper than that! There are so many different types of disabilities and although it may seem like a bit of a minefield, in order to be truly inclusive (which by the way, we absolutely should be!) then it is important that we consider disability as a whole. A really important thing for you and your business to consider is… ‘Just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean that it’s not there!’ It’s probably easy to remember to consider those disabilities that seem obvious - those people who use wheelchairs, those who walk with walking frames or on sticks and those people who are visually impaired and use either a cane or have a guide dog. But there are so many disabilities that are not visible but nevertheless, they also need adjustments to be made so that they to can live an independent life with minimal stress. For example, If you were to think about your own business, how accessible are you for people with the following disabilities?: - Visually impaired - Hearing impaired - People who are Neurodivergent Is *YOUR* door open to these potential customers… or are you happy for them to miss out, and for YOU to miss out too? #retail #retailstores #resturantchains #customerservice

Iansyst, the market leaders in accessibility and inclusion, asked Creative Company to review its brand style and implementation. This is a past project that we are extremely proud to have been a part of. One of our specialisms is identity development and communication. Our approach had to be consistent and in keeping with previous identities that they have already developed. We also selected a lead typeface, FS Me, that was perfectly suited to the brand.
