💡 Cleantech for Europe Scaleup Coalition Joins Innovation Fund Conference on Driving Sustainable Innovation 💡 Packed day at CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency's #IFCleantech conference, with speeches from European Commission EVP Maroš Šefčovič, EU Environment and Climate Director General Kurt Vandenberghe, and the leaders of cleantech scale-ups from across Europe. The need to scale up cleantech emerged as key to Europe’s economic competitiveness, energy resilience and security. In a keynote address on the topic of deployment and scaling up cleantech manufacturing, Vaitea Cowan, co-founder of Enapter, made the case for simpler and better public funding for cleantech manufacturing, in particular by focusing urgently on de-risking instruments which can help European innovators to compete on a level playing field by freeing up precious working capital. One clear theme from the day: the role of ambitious policymaking to massively increase funding for the most promising clean technologies in Europe. In the words of Kurt Vandenberghe, “We have made the regulatory case. Now, we need to make the business case." Left this impressive conference uplifted by the broad consensus around the need for speed, scale, and simplicity for the competitive sustainability and resilience of Europe’s manufacturing base. The ramp up of capital-intensive cleantech manufacturing is tricky, and the government has an important role in enabling the long-term framework conditions that catalyze the needed private investment. It is cheaper to keep an industry in Europe in the first place than to attempt to reshore it once it has been lost, so the implementation of non-price criteria in auctions and public procurement calls will be key, among other things - we need to find the right balance between cheap, good, and fair. The EU is getting serious about how to decarbonize each sector and what it will take to get there - exploring avenues to support projects, such as the Sovereignty Seal, Auctions-as-a-Service, and new blended finance products such as public counter-guarantees to address working capital needs of cleantech manufacturing scale up. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, and I really appreciated DG CLIMA’s Kurt Vandenberghe closing on a Seneca quote to much the same effect: “It’s not because things are difficult that we don’t dare, it’s because we don’t dare that things are difficult.” Huge thanks to policymakers leading the way on this topic Paloma Aba Garrote Maroš Šefčovič Roman Doubrava Kerstin Jorna Alex Paquot Jacek Truszczynski Katrien De Marez Ruben Devogelaer Also fantastic to link up with the cleantech community in person Vaitea Cowan Christopher Frey Per Sonesson Ola Hansén Julia Altenhofer Pierre-Louis Delon #EU #Cleantech #IFCleantech

Today in Brussels, at the Cleantech for Europe Summit 2024, we officially joined the Cleantech Scale-up Coalition alongside ten cleantech innovators. “We are thrilled to see Atlas Agro joining the Cleantech Scale-up Coalition. Cleantech for Europe Summit proved the cleantech industry stands ready to power Europe’s competitiveness, but we urgently need a comprehensive industrial, competition, and trade policy to match our global peers. The Scale-up Coalition plays a vital role to equip policymakers with experiences from the field and inform Europe’s strategy,” said Jules Besnainou, Executive Director, Cleantech for Europe. Our CEO, Petter Østbø was on hand for the induction ceremony saying, "We are grateful for the opportunity to join the Scale-up Coalition, which brings together climate companies with members of the European Parliament and financiers to ensure climate businesses succeed in Europe, and that Europe succeeds with climate business." While Europe is well-equipped to finance new early-stage technologies, both public and private capital are lacking when it comes to industrializing these technologies at climate-relevant scale. Working closely with its Investor and Scale-up Coalitions, Cleantech for Europe bridges the gap between cleantech and policy leaders with the aim of ushering in a new era of European industrial leadership. The Cleantech Scale-up Coalition by Cleantech for Europe, convenes Europe’s 22 most promising cleantech scaleups and represents the next generation of European clean industry. We are proud to join this brilliant group of ambitious, forward thinking climate leaders as we do our part to decarbonize food and farming. Give our fellow coalition members a follow to track our collective progress: Stegra, Enapter, Plastic Energy, Electrochaea, Sunfire, Hydrovolt, Ecocem Global, Skeleton Technologies, ZE ENERGY, Energy Dome, Verkor & newly joined Battolyser Systems, Baseload Capital, Climeworks, Electra, Néolithe, cylib, REGA ENERGY, Heart Aerospace, INERATEC and Genvia. 🇪🇺 #cleantech #renewableenergy #sustainability #scaleup

Very much enjoyed participating in the Green Fuels Talk at NCE Maritime CleanTech Cleantech’s Innovation Workshop on tech barriers today! Green ammonia is an important part of the energy mix required to decarbonise the maritime sector. Norway has a very good basis to become a leading producer of green ammonia and harvesting first mover advantages, and there is an urgent need for policy development to lead and drive the change to green. Important discussions on safety, market development and the need for government support.

Investing strategically in #CCUS provides a huge opportunity for the UK to develop a world-leading position in clean technology. This includes welcome funding announced by both the UK government and The Labour Party aimed at boosting the UK's clean tech supply chains. However, some challenges remain including the need to reduce the cost of power for industrial customers, reform the planning systems and invest in key skills. Given the urgent need to decarbonise our most carbon-intensive industries, and the policy incentives governments around the world are putting in place, now is the time to support the UK's leading innovators to reach their full potential. We're so excited to release our first Latin America-focused list of great innovators in Cleantech! - The LATAM 25 The overarching trend I have observed in this list compared to our #50toWatch, #APAC25, and #GlobalCleantech100 is how high-impact the innovators are/will be on the list... 🪸For sustainability, the primary focus isn’t on carbon it’s on other planetary boundaries – nature restoration, protection, and plastics reduction - especially in the blue economy (Coral Vita, Remora). 🌳 Solutions have a high potential social impact, from reducing costs for low-income communities, e.g., refilling solutions while reducing single-use plastic (Algramo) to enabling Indigenous communities to protect forests in the Amazon (MOMBAK).

🌍 How do we scale sustainable innovation to tackle the climate crisis? 💡 Yesterday, I had the pleasure of giving a tour of BlueCity (010) to a delegation from PSPS Business Abroad, and it was a remarkable opportunity to discuss how circular economy principles can be scaled to reduce our collective carbon footprint. 🌱 As we explored the innovative startups within BlueCity (010), we exchanged ideas on how sustainable solutions — from renewable energy systems⚡ to waste-free production methods 🌿 — can move beyond pilot projects and make a global impact. Scaling these efforts is key, and it was inspiring to hear the delegation's insights on building partnerships 🤝 and leveraging international networks 🌐 to make this a reality. In the face of climate challenges, we need to act not just locally, but globally. Yesterday’s discussions were a step toward that. Let's continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in sustainable innovation. 🌍💡 #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #ScalingUp #BlueCity #PSPSBusinessAbroad #ClimateAction
