Noted on Caffeine daily, is the Climate Tech Summit Aotearoa on the 20th of June. It is good to see this conference offering free places and there is an unwritten rule that this will invite in the outliers. History tells us the outliers are bound to be disruptive, but history also tells us the way we organise conferences does not welcome disruptors in a tightly held program. I have noted that this forces the disruptors to band together to form alternative groups that further alienates them from the discussion. Thus, losing the opportunity to question assumptions. I have no concrete suggestions to make as to how conferences might be organised in the future, but I do know that the current accepted format is tired and in need of a rethink. Once again without knowing how this will be conducted, I do know what the hallmark of a good conference must be. It must not relegate different thinkers to the classic breakout model where the status quo inevitably prevails. Being human, we rush to early consensus, especially as breakouts are carefully timed. New ideas worth considering can only come from the clash of perspectives and must be curated by those with insight. Our world is suffering from speed thinking when we know in our hearts that too much is overlooked to guarantee long term success for people, planet and dare I say profit.
Creative HQ & WellingtonNZ are excited to present the Climate Tech Summit on 20 June at the St. James Theatre! The event is designed to showcase up-and-coming and established climate focussed ventures from around Aotearoa, with a focus on those based in Te Upoko o Te Ika a Māui, Wellington. The event will celebrate these innovations as part of the solution to the climate crisis as well as facilitate discussion and inspire others to take action to meet our carbon reduction and other climate and environmental goals. With support from Wellington City Council's Climate and Sustainability fund, we are pleased to offer free tickets for pakihi Māori and community climate leaders. As connectors in this space we would love to offer the opportunity for 10 people to attend for free! Email - tuiterino@gmail.com for registration details.

Why is embracing uncertainty a powerful tool to address complex societal issues, such as the climate crises? As Kaelin DeLong explains, while data and graphs provide valuable insights, they only tell part of the story. Embracing the diversity of emotions, values, and assumptions held by different stakeholder groups, along with the inherent uncertainty, is an important first step in any decision-making process. It allows us to recognize gaps and limitations in our understanding, which can pave the way for working together on more just and sustainable solutions for the climate crisis. 🌐 Let’s celebrate Earth Day today by encouraging dialogue, respecting disagreements, and fostering trust in science. 💚🌏 This video was produced during the Climateurope2 Festival. Special thanks to speaker Kaelin DeLong, and the entire Athena COALESCE SciComm project team and consortium. What Kaelin DeLong explains in this video is very valuable not specific to climate crisis. It is also applicable to pandemics and efforts for preparing pandemics in an inter- and trans-disciplinary way.

Stages of #climatetechnology #innovation: emergence, deployment and large-scale adoption The path from conceptualizing climate solutions to making them widely adopted is complex and involves multiple stages. UNIDO’s approach highlights three key stages: Emergence – new climate technologies are developed and refined. Deployment – these technologies are implemented on a smaller scale to test their effectiveness. Large-scale adoption – proven technologies are scaled to create significant impact. What do you see as the biggest challenges in advancing climate technology from the emergence stage to large-scale adoption? A few weeks ago at #DorsetCOP, we had the privilege of co-hosting a workshop with Planet Wimborne, a community of people who’ve come together with purpose, creativity, and heart. With so many examples of positive localised impact, Planet Wimborne inspired us to dream up a world where every community had a well-resourced vehicle to support them navigate the complexity of the climate and ecological crisis, a vehicle to support them weave together local projects, ideas, and passions. What if these “initiatives” were seen not as side projects, but as essential ways to strengthen our connections to each other and to the land? What if we recognised that these projects do more than solve problems? They meet a deeper need to belong, to steward, and to reimagine the social fabric of our communities. What if we truly valued the role they play in shaping the future we want to create? And what if, instead of placing barriers in the way of community projects, we built systems that uplift them—allowing them to hire young staff, collaborate freely, and operate without restriction? What if top-down policies supported every place in having a “Planet Wimborne,” led by the community, for the community, and creating the local conditions for meaningful change? What if we could shift the focus from profits to people, from short-term gains to long-term resilience? What if...
