I've become a bit of a nerd for global philanthropy trends, so was very excited to dig into the fifth installment of ClimateWorks Foundation's brilliant annual #FundingTrends piece 🤓 Some of the key takeaways are pretty incredible: - 💸 There was a 20% (!!!) increase in philanthropic funding towards climate change mitigation efforts between 2022-2023 alone. However, this still only represents 2% of total philanthropic giving in 2023. Much more needs to be deployed to meet the urgency of the climate crisis. - 🌍 Similarly, foundation funding to some of the most climate-vulnerable regions (including Africa, Asia & Oceania, and Latin America) increased substantially between 2019-2023. And yet, frustratingly, giving to these regions represented just 20% of total foundation funding towards a single country or region. - 🫨 Middle-to-low income countries received much lower levels of core funding to support their climate mitigation efforts than the U.S. and Europe (core funding, i.e. overhead, is the lifeblood of ANY organization, and essential to ensuring long term success and sustainability). I genuinely believe in the transformative power of philanthropy to address the biggest challenges of our time. When practiced in a way that is equitable, collaborative, inclusive, and FAST --- foundations can be a critical tool to amplify and accelerate the hard work being done at the grassroots level. Global philanthropic giving to climate change mitigation grew over the past year, but still accounts for less than 2% of total giving. Terraset exists to change that.

A new report from ClimateWorks Foundation reveals that philanthropic funding for climate mitigation increased significantly in 2023, outpacing the growth in overall global philanthropic giving for the first time since 2020. However, sustained climate progress will require much more action and funding. This year’s #FundingTrends2024 report covers five years of foundation funding data from 2019 to 2023.  Key insights include:  🔹Annual foundation funding for climate mitigation nearly tripled from 2019 to 2023.   🔹 Low-to-middle-income countries receive much lower levels of flexible or core funding for climate mitigation.  🔹 Adaptation and resilience initiatives gained momentum, receiving at least $600 million in 2023.  Philanthropy must adopt climate strategies with the urgency, intensity, and coordination needed for bold climate action. 🎉 Good news for climate: Philanthropic giving to climate is up 20%. 🎉 And good news for industry decarbonisation: philanthropic giving on this topic reached $130 million in 2023, up from only $45 million in 2019. 🚗+🏭 But transportation and industry together still only attract about 6.5% of climate philanthropic giving, when they represent 40% of global emissions. 🪙 For all of us working in this space, it means we are relying on few philanthropic dollars to keep 1.5C or even well-below 2C alive! A bright spot in the giving landscape from a new report: global giving to curb climate change increased 20% in 2023, according to data released Tuesday by the ClimateWorks Foundation. This reaffirms our own For Momentum data that climate and sustainability-focused nonprofits have risen to the #1 cause type that companies are supporting through their partnership work in recent years. Astonishingly, growth in climate change giving was double giving to global nonprofits, which the report says only grew by 10% in 2023.
