We are excited to announce that the US Navy is using Sofar’s Wayfinder platform to enhance safe routing at sea. 🔱 The Navy’s two primary weather forecasting centers, Fleet Weather Center - Norfolk (FWC-N) and Fleet Weather Center San Diego (FWC-SD), leverage Wayfinder’s optimized voyage guidance to identify safe and efficient route options for Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships. Wayfinder uses real-time data collected by Sofar’s global network of Spotter buoys to automatically generate a forecast along a vessel’s route and significantly reduce weather uncertainty. This empowers FWC personnel to validate forecast models, examine a vessel’s potential route options more efficiently, and reduce manual tasks. “Powered by our real-time ocean weather sensor network, Wayfinder will help the Navy scale its routing operations to support a heterogeneous fleet operating in conditions made more extreme by the effects of climate change,” said Tim Janssen, co-founder and CEO of Sofar. The Navy is piloting Wayfinder under U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (CNMOC) and Sofar’s five-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). The University of Notre Dame opened the doors to a new Mach 10 quiet wind tunnel Saturday, a first-of-its-kind facility that adds to the Defense Department’s capacity to research and test hypersonic capabilities. Hosted by the Notre Dame Turbomachinery Laboratory, the 3,000-square-foot lab space is home to a quiet wind tunnel able to simulate hypersonic flight at speeds up to Mach 10 — or 10 times the speed of sound. The Navy served as the funding agency for the tunnel’s fabrication, with Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane acting as the contract monitor, and future operations will be funded through research grants and contracts. https://lnkd.in/eT5Yr89M

Graduation day! Today’s Fall Quarter graduating class of 248 new NPS alumni includes U.S. Navy Lt. Adam Summers and U.S. Navy Lt. Jordan Whittle, whose classified thesis research racked up an impressive five quarterly student awards, including the Surface Navy Association’s Award for Excellence in Surface Warfare Research. Summers and Whittle, a submarine officer and nuclear trained surface warfare officer, respectively, are graduating from NPS’ defense financial management curriculum, and are both now heading back to sea for Department Head tours. Their award-winning thesis explored the most cost-effective means of imposing localized sea denial in a constrained water space. “Our thesis addresses two priorities of the CNOs 2024 NAVPLAN, one of them being the integration of robotic and autonomous systems, and the other being non-conventional sea denial,” said Whittle. In their thesis, the duo compare conventional surface and other assets to a flotilla of unmanned surface vessels, generating concepts of operation and employment that meet the commander’s intent for a specific threat environment. “Our research is inspired by modern conflicts in the Black Sea and the Red Sea, where unmanned systems are targeting capital ships,” said Summers. “These relatively low-cost unmanned systems are imposing a negative cost asymmetry on warships by forcing them to expend multi-million dollar defensive ordnance, or risk loss of the warship,” added Whittle.
