Veterans from the United States military often face challenges such as homelessness and financial struggles after leaving the military. This unfortunate reality raises the question: why does this happen? ☑️Lack of Transition Assistance One of the primary reasons why veterans end up homeless and broke after leaving the military is the lack of adequate transition assistance. Without proper guidance and resources, many veterans fall through the cracks and end up facing financial hardships. ☑️Mental Health Challenges Another significant factor contributing to veterans' homelessness and financial struggles is the prevalence of mental health challenges among this population. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety are common among veterans who have experienced traumatic events during their service. These mental health issues can hinder their ability to maintain stable employment and financial stability, ultimately leading to homelessness. ☑️Substance Abuse Substance abuse is another issue that can contribute to veterans' homelessness and financial difficulties. Many veterans turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with their trauma and stress. However, substance abuse can quickly spiral out of control and lead to job loss, financial instability, and eventually homelessness. ☑️Lack of Affordable Housing The lack of affordable housing is a significant barrier that many veterans face when trying to transition back into civilian life. Rising housing costs, limited availability of affordable housing units, and lack of support for housing assistance programs can leave veterans without stable living arrangements. ☑️Financial Challenges Financial challenges, such as high levels of debt, low income, and lack of financial literacy, can also contribute to veterans' homelessness and financial struggles. Many veterans struggle to adjust to civilian wages after leaving the military, leading to financial instability. ☑️Solutions and Support Services To address the issue of veterans' homelessness and financial struggles, it is crucial to provide them with adequate support services and resources. This includes expanding transition assistance programs, increasing access to mental health care, substance abuse treatment, and affordable housing options. ➡️Veterans from the United States military face significant challenges such as homelessness, mental health issues and financial struggles after leaving the military due to various factors. By addressing the root causes of these issues and providing veterans with the necessary support and resources, we can help them transition back into civilian life successfully and prevent them from ending up homeless and broke. At MakeTheConnection.net, veterans and their families can find a wealth of information and assistance to cope with the challenges they may be facing.

Are you a military veteran living in or around Lewiston, Idaho? You are not alone, and there are so many resources available for help. Here is a list of some resources available to veterans in or around the Lewiston region. Please let me know if I can expand this list. There's a program called Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) that can help with rent assistance, utility assistance, rapid rehousing of homeless veterans, gas vouchers, and up to $1,200 in automotive repairs. They will also help with legal assistance, such as evictions or debt collection, child support, and a few other things. That's just some of the services they offer. SSVF grantees vary depending on location. The Blue Mountain Action Council out of Walla Walla is an amazing group that serves a few regionally nearby communities. Community Action Partnership of Lewiston is an SSFV grantee and case management location. https://lnkd.in/gyvmWAvG The Salvation Army in Lewiston also has a Veterans Services program, accessible via the link below, or by calling the local Salvation Army. https://lnkd.in/gFvqVZqr Again, you are not alone, and if you're in need of help, that's perfectly okay. Times are hard for everyone. As a community we have to love compassionately and help our neighbors. Additionally, calling 211 will give you an option for Veteran services. I highly recommend starting with contacting your local VA representative or advocate. They will be able to better help you navigate potential resources, and find more that I don't know about. #military #veteran #socialservices #communityresources #public #gethelp #veterancrisis #crisismanagement #billassistance #legalhelp #lewiston #idaho #lewistonidaho #clarkston #va #help #publichealth #lcvalley

HEARTH: Proudly supporting our transitioning service members! In Fiscal Year (FY) 2023, a quality improvement demonstration project called the Help with Employment, Agency, Risk, Transitions and Housing (HEARTH) Project was initiated to enhance the existing Post-9/11 M2VA Case Management Program process. The HEARTH Project is utilizing a predictive analytics model to identify Army Veterans at highest risk experiencing negative transition outcomes. A virtual, national VHA transition of care team proactively outreach to these high-risk Veterans who have been identified by the HEARTH Project’s predictive analytics model. The desired outcomes for the HEARTH Project include: (1) enrolling Veterans at their local VAMC; (2) connecting Veterans with either a VA or non-VA based primary care team; (3) promoting successful Veteran reintegration into civilian society, such as through securing employment and housing; and (4) linking Veterans with suicidal ideations to appropriate services and care. In the linked article, a HEARTH Veteran shares how his HEARTH social worker supported him when he needed it most.

We're proud of the work that our member Veterans' House Canada does to get former Canadian Armed Forces members off the streets and into permanent housing. The most recent point-in-time count found that about 4% of those homeless in Ottawa are veterans.

It could be me but I don't think this is getting enough press. In my experience, #veteran homelessness is as predictable as it is heartbreaking and is a major contributor to the problem nearly every major city in the US is attempting to solve. When one transitions from active duty to civilian life, all that was once taken care of for you in exchange for your commitment to defend (food, housing, medical care, etc.) is gone, with a few exceptions made for #veterans with service-related disabilities. You are on your own. Most #veterans, in part due to the maturity, resilience and preparation they gained during military service, are well-equipped to make the journey from service-member to civilian. Others are not so fortunate and exit the military with nothing more than a rough idea or conceptual path they intend to follow. Many are unaware and ill-prepared to face the realities they will encounter in replacing the basic human necessities of food, shelter and livelihood that was afforded to them through their service. It's a massive burden and some #veterans succumb in the direst of ways. Kudos to the #veteransadministration for this move. We have a long way to go but I see this as a positive step in the right direction. #veteransemployment #veteranhiring #veteranaffairs https://lnkd.in/g_wrunHq
