Wow, my Singapore PR rejection stirred up some noise! Last time I was this famous was when I had a whole plane to myself coming back from NYC 😅 Let me take the chance to clarify a few things. 1/ It’s not a human right to receive PR. Nor do I feel “entitled” to receive it. Beware people spinning this narrative to score points on social media. 2/ It’s up to SG to judge whether I am a net contributor to its society - and I fully respect the judgment. My tweet was a genuine question of: what does it take? As is common here, there’s no transparency into why someone is rejected. This is what prompted me to tweet. 3/ A deeper issue (that I was not aware of) has been the response in DMs from many PRs - and non-PR expats - who have concluded that it’s not worthwhile applying for PR at all. “Permanent” Residency is a misnomer. Many now have to apply yearly (!) for re-entry. 4/ The above point is the primary reason why I am not re-applying for PR. 5/ I intend to stay in Singapore with my family on an EP for now. My wife is already a PR, and our daughter is on a DP. However we have started exploring alternatives, which we likely wouldn’t have done had I gotten the PR. Finally, let me say that I love Singapore. It’s a fantastic place to live. I am a huge fan of Lee Kuan Yew, as many of you know. I have always enjoyed seeing him (and other great leaders like Tharman Shanmugaratnam) express that Singapore has its own way of doing things. I also believe a key part of Singapore’s success is to listen, learn, and improve where appropriate. Thanks for all the valuable advice and offers to help I’ve received in the last few days! I greatly appreciate it.
