Combat Stress’ Post

Veterans are the heart of everything we do. We know that asking for help can be difficult for former serving personnel so our staff receive training to understand military life and the mental health difficulties veterans may face after leaving the Armed Forces. Many of the veterans we support have experienced multiple traumas, and so it’s important that our staff are able to recognise the impact of traumatic experiences on everyday life and are able to respond in a way that prevents further harm, supports their recovery and improves their life chances. Our trauma-informed training is undertaken by all staff – as every meeting we have with veteran matters, whether this is kitchen staff, administrators, fundraisers, clinicians or directors. We want to prevent retraumatisation by enabling everyone to understand some of the ways trauma might affect the veterans who seek our help. We ensure that every interaction we have with them will help them feel safe and confident in the care we provide. We use this knowledge to inform how our whole organisation works, working to principles that ensure we’re operating in a trauma-informed way. These principles include safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment and cultural consideration. Look out for our next post to find out more about these principles. #trauma #traumainformed #veteransupport #veterancommunity
