Around half the world population considers their area to be friendly to the queer community, a number which is largely unchanged globally but which in many areas displays backsliding, writes Gallup’s Justin McCarthy. ✔️ Acceptance is down from levels between 2020 and 2022, but it is still more than double the 21% first measured in 2006. ✔️ Nordic countries continue to rank among the most accepting places in the world. ✔️ Nepal remains the only non–Western country among the most accepting nations. For individuals with LGBT+ identities this can often require extra care and attention. Interpreters need to use accurate terminology and understand the cultural context. It is important to avoid using outdated or inappropriate terms that could misrepresent someone. Personally, I find it disappointing that the Member for Bonnyville-Cold Lake, Scott Cyr, would rise in the Legislature and state how proud he and all Members of his Caucus are to support misguided policies and guidelines, which if come to pass will not only dismantle human rights, but set a dangerous precedent throughout Canada. Let’s be clear, the most powerful thing in the lives of Transgender youth, is a supportive and loving family and being able to live in a neighbourhood where they are safe, welcome, and affirmed as their authentic self. For anyone to suggest that boldly defending the human rights and dignity of our most vulnerable neighbours, or proudly standing up to protect the very existence of equity deserving groups or individuals - to suggest that this somehow demonstrates a lack of support for the wellbeing of children and their families, is not only false, but harmful and divisive. To all parents, families, and youth, most especially those who are transgender, two spirit, non binary: We stand with you. The acknowledgment of parents as primary caregivers is one that resonates deeply with many, including myself, a non-binary parent of two transgender sons. However, the discussion of what constitutes a family and the roles within it must be inclusive and evolve with our society. The rhetoric that frames parental involvement in children's upbringing as a counter to so-called 'radical' influences is not only narrow but potentially damaging. It perpetuates a limited understanding of what a family can be. It fails to recognize that the true radical act is to love and accept our children as they are, advocating for their rights and well-being in a society that often resists such diversity. Families are not a monolith. They are as varied as the individuals that make them up. By holding onto outdated models, we risk alienating members of our community who do not fit into these narrow definitions. This includes families like mine, where support and care are defined by understanding, acceptance, and advocacy for our transgender children's rights. To truly support families, we must expand our views to include all structures, compositions, and the unique challenges they face. The strength of a society is reflected in how it upholds and supports all its members, especially those who have been marginalized. Let us work towards a definition of family that is as encompassing and diverse as the people it is meant to serve. To eradicate QBS syndromes organisations must encourage feedback, transparency and conversations and pair juniors with supportive mentors. Reducing subjective bias and striving for equal representation are the way forward.
