On Monday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mario Nava Director-General of DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (EMPL) for the European Commission, during a visit organised by the European Community Land Trust Network. We also welcomed Dyfed Aubrey of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) to Brussels during the visit! Following the visit, Mario Nava, Director General of DG EMPL stated that "Ensuring access to social and affordable housing for vulnerable people is a priority. Community-based innovative initiatives, like the Brussels Community Land Trust Calico project, are an example of how to achieve this while strengthening local communities. I am happy that EU funding contributed to set-up the project, paving the way for more of these successful initiatives in the future.” Read and see more about the visit via the article below 👇 https://lnkd.in/ekcpXqix

📽 Please watch this video and see if your eyes don't water! The topic of socially responsible public procurement may not sound like it, but the outcomes can be quite...moving! 🙌 In this video, you get to understand and witness how the city of Valladolid in Spain contracts a local #socialeconomy actor to tackle #homelessness. #WeBuySocialEU #EUPublicProcurement AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development) Diesis Network ICLEI Europe RESEAU EUROPEEN DES VILLES ET DES REGIONS DE L'ECONOMIE SOCIALE
The city Valladolid in Spain is leading the way in using Socially Responsible Public Procurement to support homeless people. By reserving contracts for comprehensive care services under Article 77 of Directive 2014/24/EU, they are tackling one of the EU’s most pressing social challenges. With homelessness on the rise across the EU, this case shows how procurement can play a crucial role in combating this crisis. This initiative is more than just a contract—it's a commitment to human dignity and social responsibility. It’s a model that other municipalities across Europe can learn from and replicate. 🔗 Watch the testimonial video to learn more about this inspiring case study: https://lnkd.in/dMMcy-Ep #WeBuySocialEU EU Business AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development) Diesis Network ICLEI Europe REVES - EUROPEAN NETWORK OF CITIES AND REGIONS FOR THE SOCIAL ECONOMY Eurocities Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) European Social Network URBACT

With the election now called, we know that local communities are best placed to transform lives and create a fairer society. We're urging all parties to make five big reforms: 1️⃣ Introduce a Community Power Act to help local people shape public services, control local investment, and take control of local buildings and spaces. 2️⃣ Create a National Community Ownership Strategy that boosts community ownership and capacity from energy to housing to health. 3️⃣ Put communities in charge of local economic development, giving residents more control over local regeneration spending and devolving employment and skills support to the hyper-local level. 4️⃣ Make collaboration – not competition - the guiding principle of public services. Reform commissioning and shift NHS budgets to community led prevention. 5️⃣ Champion community led housing and neighbourhood planning - giving communities a tangible stake in their neighbourhoods. We believe the blueprint for a better future already exists – and it's right here in communities up and down the country. Read our full Manifesto and find out how you can have a say and show the next government what our sector can achieve: https://lnkd.in/eXnTa6wr #CommunityPowerAct #PowerOfCommunity #generalelection #policy #communitysector #vcse

Recognition of the rights of First Nations people is an important foundation to creating a more sustainable, resilient and inclusive financial system. In June, the City of Vancouver unveiled an Action Plan to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), developed in partnership with First Nations people to solidify First Nations rights in the city. To be implemented over the next five years, the plan identifies five themes: relationship foundations; redress, housing and land; cultural presence; stewardship and addressing environmental racism; and communication and accountability. UNDRIP – the only UN declaration developed by the world’s Indigenous people, including First Nations Australians – is the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous Peoples and establishes a universal framework of minimum standards for their survival, dignity and wellbeing. Over the weekend I had the pleasure of Chairing a panel at the Coop Congress run by Cooperatives UK. There’s such a diversity of efforts going on across the country: ✅collective action to demand better from public bodies - seeking to tackle cultures of institutional defensiveness (eg Post Office scandal) rather than authorities opening up dynamically to work with communities to problem solve ✅community share initiative successes (eg renewable energy) - seeing communities own their own clean energy projects and reinvest surpluses back into other local services ✅cooperative partnerships with local Gov to open up social enterprise possibilities - by councils taking a convening role, new cooperatives enterprises and cultures have flourished, bringing with them economic benefits that improve the lives of workers and communities ✅empowering underrepresented groups for community ownership - efforts to ensure the benefits of cooperative enterprises or community share offers are not the preserve of privileged communities.💯🙏 #cooperatives #renewableenergy #greenindustries #partnerships #collaboration #publicservices #communityshares #equity
