🔔The new Belgian marine spatial plan is under public review.  Let your voice be heard! Citizens can comment on the new marine spatial plan until the end of August. The plan states where there is room for which activities in the Belgian North Sea. 👏For the first time, marine reserves have been designated in the new marine spatial plan. The current plan will run until 2026. Luckily, the new one applies for a period of 8 years, until 2034, which will allow more time for nature to restore itself. 🐳The delineation of (strictly) protected marine areas fits within both the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the global biodiversity framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (30% protected natural areas) and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 (10% strictly protected natural areas). #4Sea #NorthSea #Marinespatialplan #marinereserve #oceanprotection Image: Misjel Decleer

As we mark #EarthDay, here is a video we recently did articulating the purpose of the Regional Centre of Excellence (RCoE) for Biodiversity, Forests, and Seascape Ecosystems Management. This project, serving 24 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa, is funded by the European Union and implemented by the CIFOR-ICRAF in collaboration with the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development. The project is dedicated to harnessing the power of knowledge and informed decision-making to address the pressing challenges facing our ecosystems. Our mission is to ensure forests, biodiversity and seascape ecosystems in Eastern and Southern Africa are sustainably managed and continue providing ecosystem services that contribute to the well-being of the populations, by providing improved, regular and updated information for informed decision making. #RCoE #ESA

Towards a modern and efficient European biodiversity observation network fit for multiple policies In the #EuropaBON project, funded by the European Commission, we have worked for 3.5 years to develop an integrated European-wide biodiversity monitoring framework. This framework builds on the approach from GEO BON to develop coordinated Biodiversity Observation Networks (BONs) using Essential #Biodiversity Variables (EBVs). Using a participatory approach involving over 1500 stakeholders, we have prioritized EBVs, identified relevant #monitoring technologies, developed recommendations for a spatial sampling design, and estimated the costs of implementing a continent-wide BON that covers terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems in #Europe. We anticipate that our framework supports the development of a European Biodiversity Observation Coordination Centre (#EBOCC) that is needed to better coordinate monitoring activities and data management. We further hope that our framework supports the implementation of the monitoring framework of UN CBD's #KMGBF and that it offers a model for developing BONs in other continents.
