Is it time to break the Integrated Iron and steel making model? This paper on SOFC carbon capture makes me wonder why no one is talking about the oxygen as a co product of the SOEC systems? After all oxygen is also a gas that is sold commercially! Oh and by the way used extensively in steel making to decarbonize and also burn off other impurities or alloy levels! I understand the hydrogen can be used to decarbonize iron in blast furnaces or DRI processes but how to reduce excess alloy levels in electric arc or BOS systems (just remember a lot of steel is not made from ore but remelted scrap steel (Most engineering steel in the UK, and many of the "Mini Mills" in the USA) which still would need oxygen! And if onsite no need to waste energy to turn the gas to liquid for transport (And back again for use) I also wonder if these mini Mills would benefit from importing DRI products produced at the ore extraction site in Sweden - Brazil - Canada where low cost electricity with SOEC can be used for the DRI process. It would be nice to see a discussion on these topics from Iron and steel making veterans?
The transition to carbon-free electricity generation is a pressing global imperative. While renewable energy sources have gained significant traction, carbon-based fuels are still playing a crucial role in the current energy transition. At Ceres we are always looking for ways to use our #technology across the #energy system, ways to #innovate what we do to solve really big challenges. Today we are launching a new #whitepaper, to explain how solid oxide fuel cell (#SOFC) technology can be used to lower the costs and lower the energy consumption to capture carbon in a meaningful way. Mark Selby, Chief Growth Officer at Ceres, explains more in the video below. 🎥 https://lnkd.in/e7cuRgb7 Read the full Whitepaper here: https://lnkd.in/ecpHPmnY Clean energy starts with Ceres. #CarbonDioxide #C02 #CarbonCapture #HeavyIndustry #SOFC #SolidOxide #FuelCell #Technology #EnergyConsumption #EnergyTransition #PointSources #CleanTech #LongHaul #Transportation

Great discussion last night at Energy Futures Lab, Imperial College London Annual leacture. A very engaging, entertaining and provocative talk with Michael Liebreich on the practical applications of #hydrogen, commercial options and current layers of subsidies (carrots). The panel discussion with Greg Jackson, Kate Grannell and Tim Green then debating how the energy transition really needs systemic change of thinking around not just the input energy (what we 'burn') to the outcomes we want (how we move about and use heat) ... and how that changes our economic and physical infrastructure. #energytransition

❓Does Carbon Capture hold the key to rapid decarbonization of the power sector? According to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), it appears not. Carbon capture and storage outlook worsens amidst high costs, performance | Asian Power (asian-power.com) This largely echoes my view that high upfront investment costs and operational limitations make Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) less suitable for the power systems of the future. 💡 Some additional reflections: - A significant limitation in CCUS is the need for high operating temperatures (>120°C) for carbon absorption, requiring substantial preheating and stable operational loads. This challenges the flexibility needed in the evolving power sector. - With constraints on carbon capture rates and geographic limits on carbon storage, the versatility of hydrogen across a wide range of economic sectors positions it as a preferred option to support the energy transition in the long run. - While CCUS could still play a role in hard-to-abate sectors that are challenging to electrify, hydrogen/hydrogen-derivatives, with its broader application potential, is likely to emerge as a more scalable and sustainable solution for the future. #EnergyTransition #CCUS #CarbonCapture #Hydrogen #Sustainability #PowerSector #Decarbonization

How can a gas refinery produce sustainable high pressure steam to convert natural gas into hydrogen product (SMR)? Where does it find the energy to sequester SMR-derived CO2 emissions into stable, verifiable, stored storage? When the wind stops blowing and the sun does not shine, it makes financial sense to depend on a base-load form of renewables, else decarbonization or CCU/CCS will continue to be an expensive compliance hassle. In the business of energy, whatever form it may be, going for where reserves are plentiful, predictable and "always on" is the only path towards the lowest cost per kWh, mmBTU, MJ. https://lnkd.in/e3gvdmaU #oilgas #energy #money #sustainability

As renewable energy developers struggle with the almost impenetrable complexity of regulatory and permitting bureaucracy that can add more than a decade to the timeline of a new installation, clever boffins have been quietly revolutionising the materials used to make the wires that run between the pylons that take electrons from where they're generated to where they're needed. The cost savings, energy efficiency improvements, and speed of installation that those materials are facilitating may just make the difference in the race for decarbonisation. https://lnkd.in/ecNPVGfn
