During my time studying Sustainable Development, I often found it hard not to feel overwhelmed by the scale of the challenges we face. Many of my peers felt the same, and we came together through initiatives like the Ecoanxiety Café to support one another as we grappled with the weight of these issues. One thing that consistently stood out amidst the scrutiny of sustainability approaches was the potential of nature-based solutions (NbS). That’s why, when I started my placement with the Innovation Team at Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, I was thrilled to learn about the Nature4Networks project, which explores how NbS can enhance the resilience and sustainability of Great Britain’s electricity networks. I was even more excited when I reached out to Dot (Dorota) Revill and was warmly invited to contribute to this groundbreaking initiative. Seeing how NbS—like Linear Woodlands, SuDS, and Thorny Planting—can be adapted to meet the unique demands of energy networks has been truly inspiring. These approaches not only protect critical infrastructure but also deliver environmental and social co-benefits.
