Rillig, Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Berlin, Germany Thursday, 5th December 2024, 3 pm Location: Ludwig Erhard Saal, Unter den Eichen 87, Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung When performing experiments in the environmental sciences we typically only use one or two factors, and thus we know little about the effects of multiple, concurrently acting factors. This is true in particular for research on impacts of factors of global change. We have been asking a slightly different question, about the effects of the number of factors, using a novel experimental design imported from #biodiversity-#ecosystem function research. The talk will introduce some of the results of this work, shifting our focus to the role of multiple jointly acting factors also in general. https://lnkd.in/e4TUCFjX

Her PhD in a non-academic environment will be supervised by Ana Margarida Fortes (#ULisbon) and co-supervised by Sonia Osorio (#UMálaga) in collaboration with Frutas Classe (Tânia S.). Through OMICs (#transcriptomics, #metabolomics, #hormonomics), she will explore the mechanisms associated with the susceptibility and resistance of #strawberries ´genotypes under #Powdery #mildew disease. Candidate genes involved in susceptibility will be further mutated through #CRISPR-Cas9. Photosynthetic microorganisms, such as cyanobacteria and microalgae play a key role in the ecosystem and hold great economic potential for a sustainable future. By using genetic engineering, many chemicals can be synthesised by these microorganisms taking advantage of photosynthesis. Gábor Szilveszter Tóth explored the possibilities to use photosynthetic microorganisms entrapped in hydrogel matrices. Immobilised systems are an effective strategy for enhancing production, simplifying operation, and facilitating upscaling. The results of this research contribute to the advancement of a more sustainable chemical industry by highlighting the versatility of photosynthetic microorganisms for applications in different solid-state chemical production systems.
