📰 🗣 Earlier in the summer I was lucky enough to sit down with the brilliant Emma Latham-Jones to talk all things #NaturalCapital as part of her latest series for Verdentum. The conversation was hugely stimulating and we covered everything from the macro of compliance vs. voluntary markets to the micro of 'true-cost accounting' and additionality - hopefully clarifying some key points involved in the process of payments for #EcosystemServices in the process. 📣 I'm thrilled to share the third interview in the summer series featuring Isabel Milligan, Head of Nature Assets at Great Yellow, on Verdentum's blog. Izzie’s dedication to advancing high-integrity natural capital markets is truly inspiring. The first time I met her, I was struck by her innovative approach and commitment to sustainable environmental finance, which was grounded in a deep understanding of how we can effectively merge ecological restoration with private investment in practice. Izzie has a great grasp of how things actually work - on the ground! 👩🌾 Her work exemplifies how we can create a balanced relationship between nature and economics. I'm really excited about our #citizenscience work, whose multiple benefits include collecting vital data on the state of the #Chilterns' #environment and developing powerful partnerships - for example with local communities, research institutions and water companies. It's particularly rewarding to see the many hours of volunteer and staff time leading to scientific papers and reports that shine a light on current issues of concern and provide information to support evidenced-based policy-making. An example is the report Chemicals of Emerging Concern in the Rivers Chess and Crane, published recently by Imperial College London, and which identified a range of #pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs and #insecticides in these two rivers, some of which are on the EU Water Framework Directive watch list of substances of concern. Usefully, the report also includes advice on how we can all reduce our #chemical exposure and footprints, and points to organisations campaigning to reduce the risks of #chemicals to human health. Download the report: https://lnkd.in/eca_zeJp And thank you Content With Purpose and CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) for showcasing so beautifully our citizen science activities! #volunteering #science #Chilterns Kate Heppell Hannah Melanie Parry-Wilson Helena Soteriou-Hains Alister Leggatt Chiltern Society Catherine Moncrieff Canal & River Trust The Rivers Trust Wild Fish CHEM Trust Tony Juniper CBE NE Chief Scientist Laura Grant Richard Benwell Fidra Dr Gemma Harper OBE FAcSS
"The work of the Chilterns National Landscape citizen science network is inspiring. It’s amazing to see how empowering local volunteers to monitor our rivers not only unlocks a wealth of knowledge but also strengthens the bonds within our communities. I love that anyone can get involved and come together with a shared purpose. It’s a powerful reminder that we can all make a difference and help drive real change for a healthier planet" - Sophie Newboult, Series Development Manager at Content With Purpose. Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking at the Norfolk Landscapes Conference, to share some of the key practical steps for taking ownership of your natural capital. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Data is everything – Without accurate records, we're holding ourselves back. Poor record-keeping on farms is a major barrier to realising the full value of your natural assets. 2️⃣ Be proactive – It's vital to have a clear plan for managing your natural capital, rather than reacting to external pressures. 3️⃣ Adhere to standards – When assessing your natural capital, it's crucial to follow established frameworks. This ensures that your results are credible, accepted by external funders, and can unlock new income streams. Thanks to everyone who attended and to Norfolk FWAG for organising a brilliant event– it was a fantastic day full of valuable discussions. I'm looking forward to continuing the conversation around the importance of proper natural capital management. 🌱 #NaturalCapital #NorfolkLandscapes #Sustainability #FarmManagement #DataDriven #EnvironmentalStewardship

🤔 There are many contenders for the ‘most confusing acronym in the VCM award’. But if I had to vote on the matter, I’d definitely cast it for REDD+. I wish I could have had Nature4Climate’s REDD+ Glossary when I first started working in this space. It would have helped me get to grips with these nuances much faster! The glossary begins by unpicking the acronym. It says: R = Reducing E = Emissions D = (from) Deforestation D = (and) Forest Degradation + = the “additional activities related to conservation, sustainable forest management, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks”. It explains the differences between Jurisdictional REDD+ and Project-based REDD+ and covers terms such as ‘results-based payments’ and ‘jurisdictional carbon credit’. As a comms person, it’s very important to me that this space is as understandable as possible! It was a pleasure to contribute to this resource and I hope it helps bring a little more clarity. How can I monetise natural capital? - On a farm scale: Agri-environment schemes. - On a development scale: Environmental net gain (offsetting impacts from development). - On a landscape scale: Environmental investments (including carbon credits). To achieve net zero by 2050 EVERY bit of land must count! Join the Acre Network and start earning your fair share. https://lnkd.in/etQPvyQ7
