After a week at the 2024 #OceanDecade Conference, this is what Hub researcher and Empatheatre co-founder Dylan McGarry (Rhodes University, South Africa) concludes: "#OceanLiteracy can easily become scientific propaganda if it’s not tempered with ocean humanities and other ways of knowing and being and doing. There are many Ocean Fluent people; from small-scale fishers, to Indigenous healers, surfers, swimmers and children... We don’t need literacy in the sense that the west has described it, we need support and affirmation of existing ocean fluent people to govern and manage their own places. The #UN says “societal behaviour change” is needed. We must rather articulate the specific aspects of society that are threatening the ocean. It’s not an amorphous or monotonal threat - it is specific people, specific groups and specific industries." See a clip of Dylan's presentation from the Hub's event ⬇ During his presentation, Dylan refers to a five-minute film that explores an aspect of intangible ocean heritage and involved the participation of Indigenous knowledge holders from #SouthAfrica. 🎞 Watch the film 'Indlela Yokuphila: The Soul's Journey': https://lnkd.in/eRGMxHKQ #OceanDecade2024 #OceanDecade #OurOcean #OceanJustice UN Ocean Decade UNESCO Ocean

🌊 AQUARIUS is participating in the EuroGO-SHIP Research Infrastructure Workshop today in Venice! We’re here to explore collaboration scenarios among Research Infrastructures (RIs) to promote research and innovation, identify synergies in RI functions, and develop RI-based solutions to tackle global challenges related to our oceans and waters. 🌐 🔍 Why are we participating? As a Horizon Europe Project, AQUARIUS focuses on integrating diverse research infrastructures across Europe and providing access to them via two Transnational Access Funding calls. Our goals in this workshop are to: ✔ Understand the landscape of ocean-observing RIs and projects. ✔ Network with professionals in this field. ✔ Raise awareness of available and emerging RI services and facilities. 📬 Subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on all our activities! https://lnkd.in/euHeWKhN #ResearchInnovation #OceanScience #MarineResearch #FreshwaterResearch #EUResearch Marine Institute #EUGreenDeal Horizon Europe European Research Executive Agency (REA) #HorizonEU #MissionOcean DANUBIUS-RI ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System EMODnet EuroGOOS, European Global Ocean Observing System EuroGO-SHIP Project EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre EMSO ERIC Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership

Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific that is recovering from a major earthquake, has been the focus for the last decade of New York Botanical Garden scientists and their partners in the multidisciplinary "Plants and People of Vanuatu" project (https://lnkd.in/e8n49gpD), which is documenting Vanuatu's incredible biodiversity and cultural knowledge. Here's their latest research.
"On Tanna, the sun is not a distant celestial body, but rather an active player in the biosocial, multicultural landscape of the island." In a recent publication in PLOS One, Drs. Mike Balick, Gregory Plunkett, and K. David Harrison document the multifaceted role that the sun plays in the lives and beliefs of the people of Tanna, Vanuatu, in the South Pacific. "It provides information—either directly or transmitted through plants and the land—guiding people in time-reckoning, agriculture, architecture, and more," they continue. NYBG scientists have been working with Vanuatuan colleagues to preserve and support Indigenous knowledge and traditional practices in the archipelago of 80 islands. Today's the day! The Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) research cruise sets sail on a 5-week voyage from Southampton to Argentina, taking an abundance of marine measurements along the way: Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e8Kn2-qZ Scientists onboard, including PML's Dr Gavin Tilstone will be sharing updates from the ship on the new AMT LinkedIn page here: Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) The UN Ocean Decade-endorsed Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) is a research programme that samples the open ocean between the UK and the South Atlantic. This research cruise, led by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and funded by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council’s National Capability, is a highly important expedition for the marine science community as it collects samples along the length of the Atlantic, producing a unique dataset and the opportunity to monitor changes in this expansive ocean.

Give your input into the future of Arctic #research priorities! The goal of the fourth International Conference on Arctic Research Planning engagement process is to ensure that the scientific priorities for the next decade are firmly grounded on the advice and needs of Arctic scientists and science organizations, #Indigenous peoples and #Arctic residents, stakeholders, and rights-holders. The purpose of the ICARP IV Survey is to gather input on research priorities for the next decade (2025–2035). This includes collecting information on implementation: for example, the best research practices to date, key lessons learned in the last decade, and strategies for improvement. https://lnkd.in/evFjfzaf

📢Great news! The report of GRANULAR's latest knowledge transfer accelerator is officially out! Dive into the results of "One, None, Thousands of Ruralities: A New Vision Based on Functionalities", you can also have a look at the presentations and recordings of the event.
🤝 #GRANULAR and RUSTIK have teamed up to present a new perspective on the essence of rural areas. In collaboration with the Joint Research Centre (JRC), we have delved into the true nature of functional areas, exploring how people inhabit and cross the urban-rural divide, and assessing their access to essential services. 📄Our recent report, which builds on insights shared during the #GRANULAR webinar "One, none or thousands of ruralities: A new vision based on functionalities", held on 23 February, underlines the need to transcend conventional boundaries when conceptualising territories ➡ https://bit.ly/3TzfhIQ For more details on the event, visit our website 💻https://bit.ly/3wCMStJ
