Tristan’s Takeaways are BACK‼️ I just got home from the West Coast Produce Expo (WCPE) in Palm Desert, CA, and let me tell you, it was quite the weekend! From farm and field tours to keynote speakers and connecting with the nation’s top retail, wholesale, and food service companies, it was an expo I’m glad I didn’t miss! Here are some of my key takeaways: 📉 18-29 year olds hold the lowest purchase rate of berries. – During the Sustainable Produce Summit Education Sessions, Jennifer Strailey and Christina Herrick from The Packer dove into the data and revealed trends from their annual survey of consumers, retailers, and growers. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries have difficulty finding their way into the 18-29-year-olds’ fridges but are being swiped up by the 60+ and $100k+ groups. Coincidence? 🥑 Index Fresh Inc has been packing Avocados in California for over 100 years! We got to head off-site and visit some of Coachella Valley’s produce companies, including Index Fresh’s Avocado Field and Packhouse. 🛒 The Future of Produce is NOW! Jonna Parker, team lead of Fresh Foods at Circana, shared the latest consumer and sales trends on how households eat and shop for food and beverages. Spoiler alert: There is a massive opportunity for the future of fresh produce! 👨🌾 Congratulations to Eduardo Avina for being named Farmworker of the Year! The Grow the Good award, presented by The Packer and Equitable Food Initiative, highlights farmers behind the scenes who are a champion of their skills and responsibilities. What a great way to acknowledge the hard workers of the product industry. After the award ceremony, I was lucky to catch up with Elizabeth Cherry which is always a treat! ✨ Flexibility and a growth mindset are essential to disrupting the industry. Erik Wahl, a TED Speaker and Author, provided an inspiring session urging us to embrace innovation and risk in our business practices. He noted that you'll be left behind unless you wholeheartedly adopt creativity! WCPE truly pulled out all the stops for this expo! I will absolutely be attending in the future. And to anyone who was also in attendance, what were your takeaways? #TristansTakeaways #Conference #Takeaways #ProduceIndustry #WCPE

South Africa started bottling wine as far back as 1659, beginning 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 in the Cape. Traceability: Insights from the SCA Expo Last weekend, the Specialty Coffee Association Expo in Chicago brought traceability into the limelight. Our conversations were illuminating, and I've distilled some critical insights for the Coffee Intelligence community. Traceability isn't just a buzzword—it's the backbone of coffee's transformative journey. From the source to the cup, knowing the coffee's origins and journey gives us assurance and a story that resonates with our core values. The data I gathered and the narratives I encountered underscored a critical shift: We must move from opacity to transparency of those who grow our coffee. This is essential for preserving the integrity of our industry and fulfilling consumers' increasing demand for connection to our global coffee neighbors. As we chart this course forward, let's embrace the tools of technology to illuminate clear, traceable paths. It's more than a responsibility—it's an opportunity to align our practices with the conscientious consumption that our times demand. Join the conversation and be part of the change. It’s a wrap on another successful Swiss Coffee Trade Association (SCTA) event! Most of the people I spoke with believe this was the best edition yet. The panelists, organization, dinner, and networking were all exceptional. Congratulations to everyone who dedicates their time to organizing this event throughout the year! A special shout-out to SCTA Next Gen for the sustainability competition. It’s bittersweet that there can only be one winner, as all three projects deserve the spotlight and are truly inspirational. Congratulations to Louisa Marie Truß and Elucid Social for their well-deserved win! For those who missed the event, here are three key takeaways: 1) Participants experienced a significant reduction in stress levels with the proposed delay in #EUDR implementation. While this isn’t a certainty, many attendees were eager to discuss “what’s next” if the regulation is postponed. One of the main questions was, “What happens to existing EUDR contracts?” Time will tell, but I believe that premiums should remain in place for existing contracts, and roasters should continue to request full EUDR data from suppliers. This approach allows us to transition from a “go live” phase to a “trial” phase without the stress of fines, while also addressing discrepancies and automization of the system. It will also help roasters better understand the preparedness of various suppliers and provide more confidence in contracting volumes in advance for Q4 2025. 2) We need rain to return to #Brazil. While it may not be a new topic of discussion at SCTA (we talk about it each year), it is even more critical this year. With elevated temperatures and some damage already affecting the 2025/2026 crop, it’s imperative that the rains return. Fortunately, we are optimistic that this will happen in the coming week. Once the rains come, we will see flowering and fixation, and we can observe farmers' pruning decisions before determining the size of next year’s crop. I advise caution in placing too much faith in current crop estimates, as we can only scientifically assess the crop once full tours are completed in December and January. 3) #Youth and #genderbalance in the industry are improving. While we still have plenty of room for growth, I am genuinely encouraged by the amazing talent we are attracting and look forward to seeing greater diversity in coffee company leadership ranks in the years to come. #coffee #commoditytrading #coffeeconference #MyVoiceIsReallyHoarseToday!

Meet Sapling Spirits | B Corp… purveyor of climate-positive spirits and the “#SeeingGreen Solutionist of the Day” for October 15. Born out of a passion for high-quality spirits combined with love for the natural world, Sapling Spirits is a British distillery known for producing premium, handcrafted vodka and gin. The company prides itself on creating spirits with a focus on quality, sourcing locally grown ingredients, and using traditional distilling techniques. Sapling Spirits is deeply committed to sustainability, making it a core part of their business model. Each Sapling bottle not only has a carbon negative footprint, but the brand also works to help increase biodiversity, improve soil health and their local communities, and reduce glass waste. Looking back before setting course for 2025 ✨ 🌿 Sustainability in wine: A luxury or commercial necessity? 🌿 At Vinexposium Wine Paris 2024, we delved into one of the most pressing topics of our industry: #sustainability. With key players such as gatekeepers, monopolies, importers, and retailers now demanding strong sustainability policies, our outstanding panel explored what it takes to meet these expectations: 👥 Amazing chair : Beverly Tabbron MW Justin Howard-Sneyd Simon Mason Eudes Morgan Gad Pettersson This is the first in a series of three posts leading up to the Wine Paris 2025 edition, which will take place from February 10 to 12, 2025. In this first post, we will reflect on the key takeaways from the 2024 edition: 🌱 Understanding sustainable development: Originally defined in the 1987 Brundtland report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," sustainable development has now become central to our sector. 🌍 Key questions explored: What specific sustainability criteria should we consider when selecting wine suppliers? How do we guide wine suppliers who initially do not meet these criteria to improve their practices? How can we support the transition away from chemically-based monocultural agriculture that is detrimental to the soil and local ecosystems, towards regenerative agriculture? How viticulture can be a tool to reverse climate change by working collectively across the supply chain. 🚀 What’s Next? Join us next Tuesday for the second post in this series, where we will focus on concrete actions taken since the conference, and how collaborative efforts or industry-wide initiatives are essential for advancing sustainability in the wine sector. Stay tuned, and let’s continue this important conversation together. 💬 #Wine #Viticulture #Regenerativeagriculture #Climatechange #Wineindustry #Collaboration #Leadership #Winesustainability
