This WINsday’s post is dedicated to our wonderful winning speakers that shared their time, talent and treasure with our CORE students. CORE (Career Opportunities in Real Estate) is an eight module, workforce development program designed specifically to promote career awareness and attract underrepresented populations to the real estate industry. Part of what lights me up is introducing my colleagues to over 200 students in our Spring 2024 cohort. These students represent over 350 colleges and universities in 46 states. Join me in thanking Terreline (Shellie) Sims, NAAEI’s Director of Workforce Development; Peter (Tola) Adediran, Asst. Project Manager for HITT Contracting & RECA Board Member and Karen V. Mills, P.E.,Esq., Founder & CEO of GIMOS, LLC for offering words of wisdom to our students. This program would not exist without the generosity of our Founding Partners and the administrative oversight provided by Alabama Center for Real Estate (ACRE), LifeRamp and The Quadrillion. I’m passing along their words of wisdom to you… Tola’s quote: “it pays to show up in person, asking for the opportunity and offering your talents always highlighting your professional brand.” In addition to promoting RPM Careers Week, April 15-19, Shellie reminded the students that our industry offers great benefits in addition to a portable career. On a personal note, make the most of connections so that someone will carry your name into rooms that you aren’t in. Lastly, Karen reminded us that the graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take the first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream. A small neighborhood. That's what they call it. With the vast number of carpenters in Chicago. The old-school millwork guys distinguished themselves. They were a small neighborhood. As a big city made up of many named neighborhoods this term held weight. Although small, this group is made up of some of the city's biggest characters. How do you become a part of the small neighborhood? There is no official voting. There is no secret handshake. There is an initiation process to become a part of it. A place in the small neighborhood is earned. Earned by proving your skills, and ability to problem solve. By showing your ability to get along and work together. Proving your solid character. Telling great stories at break and lunch helps too. The benefits, a yearly party, and a phone call if they need you on their project or if they are looking for work. The biggest benefit is being a part of a group. Just like any good neighborhood. I had fought like hell to get there so, I'll never forget when the word "We" was added and it became.
