This just in: USAID CATALYZE partner Lumbini Tea Valley Ceylon received the world’s first Reginagri group certification in the tea industry, which will facilitate access to new, higher-value markets for 1500+ smallholder tea suppliers and break new ground for Sri Lanka’s #tea cultivation sector. By emphasizing ethical standards and sustainability, the RegenAgri certification trains farmers to adopt and implement practices that contribute to improved soil health, increased biodiversity, and reduced emissions. Meet Mohamed Kawa a young farmer in Sierra Leone, West Africa who leverages youth in Agriculture to provide sustainable solutions to the problems of Food Insecurity, Youth Unemployment, Climate Change, and Rural Women Economic Empowerment. He is the Founder and CEO of Helzee Farms- an agribusiness entity that deals in organic farming, sustainable agriculture, nature conservation, poultry, Agro-processing, etc. Mohamed's mission is to make farming and agriculture in general fashionable among the youth. Since the inception of his agribusiness barely over 1 year ago, Mohamed has: ■Provided more than a hundred employment opportunities for youth and still counting. His initiatives have inspired dozens of youth to venture into the agriculture industry. ■Planted more than 5,000 sustainable trees (Coffee, Cocoa, Cashew, etc). Another Climate action he is taking is to reduce our carbon footprint print on Mother Earth by making climate-friendly cooking energy -Briquette. ■Contributed immensely to the food industry by cultivating food crops such as cassava, maize, vegetables, rice, etc. He is also adding value to Foods such as cassava to make two of his most popular food brands -Kailahun Gari and the Kailahun Fufu Flour. He processes palm Kernel into palm Kernel Oil. Mohamed is presently constructing a poultry for 1,500 layer birds in Segbwema Town, Kailahun District. 🌱 How can sustainable agricultural practices transform local communities and fight against environmental degradation?🌾 ✳Our Project RURALITIES partner 𝗜𝗙𝗔-𝗬𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶 in CONGO, initiated innovative agricultural strategies in Bakumu-Mandombe, #Ubundu. With an area covering 67,982 ha, their experimental plots are designed to support both environmental and economic growth for the ±65,000 residents in the region. Unbelievable indeed🤔🇰🇪 Kenya imports even peanut (! Njugu) from Uganda and Malawi. A value chain that we have conducive climate and soil in western Kenya, nyanza and other regions sparingly. With all its benefits, we still meet only 20% of SMEs need despite beyond consumption, value addition and soil improvement benefits ( organic manure and moisture conservation) that can do to our farming system. While countries like Germany, 🇩🇪completely develop a value chain from production, processing, value addition, marketing and utilise waste for clean energy production and organic fertilizer for soil health, we are still a net peanut importer. Our farmers have the land, strength and motivation do to it, but our government needs to strongly support key value chains which can spur up economy and employment creation beyond over reliance on production level for largest share of employment. We need to holistically look at the value chain and integrate SMEs to support processing ( sorting, grading, packaging, storing) and marketing hence ensuring growers grow for the market and earn value from farming. We need to integrate innovative technologies in every value chain segment for sustainable and resilient transformation.
