Save is the organisation that first opened my eyes to the levels of child poverty in the UK and it is sickening to know the extent of the problem now, and to see it worsening over time and know that trend will continue if this grim policy is allowed to stand. Starmer says there’s no ‘silver bullet’ for this complex issue and that’s right of course, we need a nuanced, holistic, long term, systems-based approach to tackle this issue, BUT. Rare is the time when there’s so much evidence behind one relatively simple step that can be taken that will immediately transform a national crisis for the better, in this case by elevating the life chances of over a million children.
