Last week, we visited a project supporting internally displaced people in Sudan together with Sudanese Red Crescent Society. A visit accompanied by Mr. Bjarne Andreasen, Head of Africa Region in Danish Red Cross, and our incoming Country Manager, Mr. Hector Palacios, who is taking over from Mr. Mohammed Jaufar. The visit was organized by Sudanese Red Crescent with leadership of Secretary General Madam Aida Sayed, Branch Director Red Sea Mr. Onuor Abuali, Migration Advisor Mr. Sami Adm and the staff and volunteers engaged in the project, which is funded by the European Union. One of the project sites we visited was the centre for internally displaced people Umalgura A, where 175 families now live after having escaped conflict affected areas such as Khartoum, Al Jazeera and Darfur. Together with the European Union and other partners, we are committed to support the people of Sudan especially at this hour and time, when the majority of the population are faced with unprecedented suffering due to the ongoing conflict. Severe food insecurity and malnutrition, strained health services, disrupted education systems for the children, inadequate shelter, insufficient water, sanitation, and hygiene services, and critical protection and security issues continue to ravage the country, necessitating immediate support from the global community.

ONE YEAR LATER It’s been a year since the conflict in Sudan began and the need to highlight the unfolding crisis remains urgent. With half of Sudan’s population in need of humanitarian assistance - 25 million people - and 8.6 million individuals displaced within and outside the country, including 4 million children, the situation is dire. Over 14,000 people lost their lives. Moreover, nearly 5 million people are on the brink of famine and an additional 18 million face acute food insecurity - 10 million more than the last year. The international community must continue in supporting the response and use its influence for a positive change. Raising awareness, advocating for systemic reforms, partnering with local organizations and grassroots efforts are just a few of the tangible actions that can help Sudan through this challenging times. During my six years in this country, I’ve witnessed the unwavering resilience of the Sudanese people firsthand. From the 2019 revolution to the demonstrations post 2021, the people of Sudan continued to strive for a better future. However, realizing this future, will now depends also on the support from the international community. Sudan can’t afford to wait any longer. The time to act is now. #oneyear #sudan #keepeyeonsudan

The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has created one of the world’s largest displacement crises, with more than 10 million people forced to flee their homes. More than 680,000 people have arrived in South Sudan since April last year, at a time when the country’s health system and existing humanitarian assistance can barely meet its population’s needs. In the coming months, the pressure on health services and aid organisations is likely to increase, with an estimated seven million people predicted to be without access to sufficient food by July. We urgently call on international donors to allocate funding to address the needs of the returnees, refugees and host populations in South Sudan. This must include the provision of food, water, shelter, sanitation and medical care, as well as the means for people to continue their journeys. In the humanitarian sector, every day brings a new crisis or disaster. One year on from the onset of the conflict in #Sudan, over 9.4 million people have been displaced, half of whom are children. In 2024, over 25 million are in need of humanitarian assistance; more than one-third of the country’s population is facing acute hunger and potential famine. In the midst of the world's largest internal displacement crisis, these figures serve as a sobering reminder to keep #eyesonsudan and to continue advocating for an immediate cessation of hostilities and additional funding to meet the needs of conflict-affected communities across the country.
Over one year since the conflict erupted in Sudan, the devastation is showing no signs of slowing down. With every week that passes, thousands of families are being forced to uproot and flee. So far, more than 8 million people, half of them children, have been displaced within #Sudan and to neighboring countries. Relief International continues doing vital work, calling for solidarity and support grows. The organization urges us all that the time to act is now.

The ongoing war in Sudan is drastically increasing people’s needs across the border in South Sudan. Refugees and returnees are facing dire conditions, with limited access to food, water, shelter, sanitation facilities, and medical care. Since April 2023, over 680,000 people have fled to South Sudan, putting immense pressure on an already strained health system. In places like Renk and Bulukat transit centers, people are stranded for weeks or months, living in precarious conditions. Malnutrition rates have skyrocketed, and the risk of disease outbreaks is high, especially with the approaching rainy season. MSF is on the ground, providing critical medical care and support, but the scale of the crisis demands a much larger international response. We urgently call on international donors to allocate funding to address the needs of the refugees, returnees, and host populations in South Sudan. This includes the provision of food, water, shelter, sanitation, and medical care, as well as support for people to continue their journeys to safety. The humanitarian response must match the reality of the needs. We cannot turn our backs on those fleeing conflict. Act now. Here is an open letter from Dr. Christos Christou , MSF International President, on the situation in Sudan and the lack of humanitarian response👇 #TalkAboutSudan #Sudan #SouthSudan #MSF #HumanitarianAid

At a recent North Africa Initiative event, Dr. Nada Fadul of the Sudanese American Public Affairs Association highlights the grave situation in Sudan, where over 100,000 people have been displaced in just the past two weeks due to ongoing conflict. The United Nations' call for $2.7 billion in humanitarian assistance has seen only a fraction of the needed funds pledged. The crisis extends beyond immediate displacement, with serious health risks looming due to the potential spread of vaccine-preventable diseases and other outbreaks like cholera, which has previously marked one of the largest outbreaks in the region. With the upcoming flood season, the risk of further disease outbreaks is significant. Dr. Fadul urges the international community to view the crisis not just within the confines of Sudan's borders but as a regional issue that demands a coordinated response. Let's discuss strategic ways to bolster humanitarian efforts and prepare for the health challenges that displacement and natural events are likely to exacerbate. #SudanCrisis #HumanitarianAid #PublicHealth
