This is #class. Sam Whitelock was a lock for the #AllBlacks in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, where the All Blacks lost to the Springboks by a single point: 12 - 11. He acknowledged the pain of losing but also took time to acknowledge the winning Springboks: "It does take time to process. It's something that will stick with our team - the one that got away. It doesn't take anything away from South Africa. They played exceptional rugby... they were playing winning rugby, and they got the job done. It's history now, we can't change it, it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, but it is what it is." More importantly, he shared his encouraging views on the Sam Cane red card, which dropped the All Blacks to 14 men at the 29th minute mark: "Sam [Cane] didn't play the way he wanted to. You get around him. It's the human part of it. You take away the rugby, and you just worry about your mates. Some people need space, some people need support being close, some people you don't say anything. So it's working out what that person needs and do it. The team were awesome. Everyone stuck together. There was no blaming of people or anything like that. That is probably one of the proudest things about that time - we all stayed together; we didn't split and become divided." ----- This is what a team should look like. There will be wins and losses. But you stick together. You rally around someone when he hurts. You don't blame. You encourage and support. You be gracious to the winner. This is my work and life philosophy too. #Litigation is a team sport. #Life is a team sport. We must have #class. #rugbyforever #sundaymusings

There's no app for that! Spinetingling moment of warrior passion in the England v Samoa rugby league test match when Toa Samoa's Gordon Chan Kum Tong lays down the Siva Tau cultural challenge to Mikey Lewis who accepts the challenge, standing his ground at the centre of the Brick Community Stadium in Wigan. Great pride and mutual respect from both players and wonderful that they can have such a ferocious exchange, yet still enjoy a joyous moment of fraternity after the game when the 173cm Chan Kum Tong shares with Lewis the reason he selected him for the challenge: "I had to find someone my height." Chan Kum Tong also presents Lewis with a garland made of chocolates, they embrace, have a laugh and onto the second Test. Some thought it crossed the line, whilst others thought it was refreshing to see undiluted passion and players proud to play contact sport for their country. For mine 'The People's Game' is at its best when fierce competitors become respectful comrades after the final whistle and this exchange was the perfect illustration. Thanks to Gordon and Mikey, two men brought together from vastly different cultural backgrounds for showing us the values that rugby league represents. #GordonMikey #ToaSamoa #SivaTau #WeEmbraceIt #ThePeoplesGame Credit: England Rugby League

Marcus Smith's brilliant drop goal against Ireland at the weekend got me reminiscing about Jonny Wilkinson's World Cup winning drop goal in 2003! I've heard Sir Clive Woodward talk a few times and read his book more than once and he tells a powerful story about the kick. In summary, he says it wasn't just talent and Jonny's steady nerves. He explains how one of their training mantras was practising ‘Thinking Clearly Under Pressure (TCUPS).’ They had brainstormed the matches and the things that might put them under pressure and worked out how they would handle them and practised them repeatedly. So Jonny had visualised taking a winning kick in the last minute and exactly what he would do to keep himself calm and capable in that situation. A great metaphor for business. Being a leader is tough. A never ending to-do list. Deadlines to meet. Customers to satisfy. Stakeholders to keep on board. The list goes on … 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬. So using the TCUPS principle. What pressures do you currently have? What are the challenges your team might face? And how will you handle them? You can't plan for everything, but you can plan for the most likely and the most critical!

My new article for Total Rugby Analysis looks at Super Rugby Pacific's defending champions Crusaders, who won in midweek but who had lost all five of their matches before that to leave them bottom of the table. I've looked at where they have been going wrong and why they can still climb the table as the campaign goes on. My new article for Total Rugby Analysis looks at Federazione Italiana Rugby, who have shown a lot of progress during the 2024 Six Nations Rugby. I've broken down their tactics under new head coach Gonzalo Quesada and have shown why they have become a much tougher team to play against under him.
