My open letter to McDonald's Australia Hey Macca’s! You’re no longer the training ground to make great young people ready for the workforce (& life!), post school. Do you remember growing up your stores were always a great place for teenagers to learn how to work as a team, under-pressure, be a leader and make fast decisions on the fly using their own brain? And if you didn’t yet know how to assess situations and make decisions you’d have a great manager to teach you! Not to mention the skills to talk & engage with customers and provide great service skills. It was always such a great place to have on one’s resume! And encouraged by career advisers, teachers and potential employers. I’ve been watching over the last year or so walking into McDonalds at various locations. It’s now soulless, extremely automated and not the hive of activity it once was. I would say I am a loyal customer, love the food and it always feels so sad walking into a restaurant now. While the automation is fine and even great from a business point of view, being highly automated and systemised its not the training ground that it once was for young people. I do say this knowing you have a future leaders program etc. The issues I have mentioned has also ripped the soul out of each store I’ve been to and therefore the customer experience. I make these comments based on the following observations: There is no longer a sense of urgency to anything and staff just follow the bouncy ball (the system). Staff no longer need to really engage with customers other than calling out a number and you’re lucky if you get eye contact. It appears that there is no longer a need to even think as the system and process does that for staff. There is no longer a sense of a good manager making the store and workers hum along with a sense of teamwork. Many stores are also now filthy most of the time as there isn’t a sense of leadership to get staff members to think to about cleaning tables and picking up after lazy customers. All of this is anecdotal based on experiences over the last year or so. I’m not trying to sound like an old person having a whinge but I’ve accepted that it’s just now a highly automated non-personal experience like many things in our world. I’d be happy to be proved wrong. I would no longer recommend McDonalds for a young person to work as their first job. I’d suggest places like Bunnings or nursery’s that require a bit of self autonomy and thought under good leadership. What a week! I just spent the last 3 days at McDonalds head office in Toronto participating in the Inspire leadership course. I always like to share why McDonalds is such an awesome place work and while conventions, and sabbaticals and awards are all fun and appreciated, it’s the focus on developing people and leaders that truly makes this a special place to work. For McDoanlds Canada, it’s starts at the top with Michèle Boudria, one the best people leaders I have ever had the opportunity learn from and someone who always makes people and their development a priority. Because we have that strong commitment to people at the top, it means it’s a priority at every level of the company. Many people outside of McDonalds may be surprised to know that we refer to ourselves as a people company, because we know that people are our key to success. So this week I attended the Inspire course with about 15 other amazing leaders at McDoanlds (including my partner in crime, Lucia Kanellopoulos) to add important leadership skills around coaching, tough conversations and talent development to name a few. The material was fantastic and beyond learning new skills I had the chance to meet some great leaders at McDonalds, from so many disciplines. It is incredibly rewarding to have had the opportunity to be fully supported in taking a week of time to attend the class in person (shout out to my amazing team for holding down the fort this week). And just a huge amount of appreciation to McDonalds for seeing the value and potential in me, and investing time and resources to further develope my leadership skills and to continue to set me up for success for the next challenge. And last, but most certainly not least a shout out to Sonia Gonzalez who facilitate the course. All I can is wow, Sonia you are fantastic, I think everyone in the class commented to me how much they enjoyed your facilitating. If you ever have a chance to attend a course that Sonia is facilitating, go! Really fantastic. So I am flying home to Vancouver re charged, excited and fired up to get back to work opening a heck of a lot of new restaurants in Western Canada. Despite global success, McDonald’s has faced failures in several regions: - Iceland: Exited due to the 2009 economic crisis. - Bolivia: Closed in 2002 after cultural resistance to fast food. - Barbados: Left after a year due to high costs and low sales. - Jamaica: Exited in 2005, unable to overcome economic challenges and local preferences. - North Macedonia: Left in 2013 following legal disputes. - Bermuda: Never entered due to strict regulations. Even giants like McDonald’s face unique challenges in different markets. #mcdonalds

We're gearing up to launch Magic Sponge: Part 2, where we'll be sitting down with inspiring leaders to explore their career journeys and lessons. We're kicking off with none other than Stuart Machin, Chief Executive of Marks and Spencer 💥 Stuart's journey started as a teenager collecting trolleys at his local Savacentre (a JV between Sainsbury’s & BHS). It was this job that inspired Stuart to forgo University and instead focus on a career in retail. Stuart climbed the ranks at Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Asda, before moving to Australia to work for Wesfarmers as Operations Director of Coles and Managing Director of Target. After a decade down under, in 2018 Stuart returned to the UK to lead M&S Food, before becoming M&S Chief Executive in 2022. Since taking the helm at M&S, Stuart has made a significant impact, accelerating the M&S transformation plan to ‘reshape for growth’. As part of this, Stuart has been working hard to instill a ‘high-performance culture’ across the organisation, with a mindset of ‘always aiming higher’ and staying ‘positively dissatisfied.’ In 2022, Stuart launched the "Straight to Stuart" initiative – a platform for M&S’s 70,000 colleagues to suggest positive changes to the business directly with the CEO. Since then, M&S colleagues have suggested almost 20,000 ideas, with many of them given a YES and implemented across the business. Stuart has also been a vocal advocate for social mobility, lobbying for reforms to the National Apprenticeship Levy to help get more young people into work. Under this leadership, M&S returned to the FTSE100 in 2023 and has seen its share price increase by around 300% over the last two years. I started talking to you about restaurants every day over 3 years ago. And it has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It’s hard to even explain all of the benefits, learnings and outcomes I didn’t see coming. And definitely too many new friends to list. But here are just a few things I want to highlight for those who know content will help them…. But don’t know where to start. 1) Writing every day instills confidence. 2) Daily practice perfects your pitch. 3) There are collabs that you don’t even see 4) Building community makes it easier. 5) Imposter syndrome is real for everyone. 6) There are people who want to help you. 7) Your client is there, and watching you. And as long as you have a strategy to create content, as well as build an audience. Your opportunity is endless. So thank you to the community I have found. 💡 How to keep your staff happy 💡 Simple... you reward them for their dedication and commitment to your organisation and let them know that they are valued... 🚀 It isn't Rocket Science 🚀 Hats off to CEO Roisin Currie at Greggs who has decided to pay all staff members that have been working for them 6+yrs a £700 bonus each after the bakery beat McDonald's to become the UK's favourite breakfast spot. I know not every organisation can afford to do things like this, but recognising the hard work and dedication from your employees will help you to retain them and have a happy workforce. Win:Win 🙂

It fills me with immense pride to share that I've been awarded as Manager of the Year at McDonald's Glenellen for 2023 🏆 However this award goes beyond just personal achievement. The dedication of my team, has truly been the bedrock of my achievements. Their support and tireless efforts everyday have helped me to overcome challenges and have transformed potential setbacks into stepping stones for growth. This award, therefore, is a reflection of the collective spirit and the extraordinary efforts of every single member of my store. Personally it's a shared victory, celebrating the incredible teamwork and resilience that has been created through my tenure which started in 2019. Personally the complexities of both work and academic commitments has certainly posed a substantial challenge to me. However it has been immensely beneficial for my growth on both a personal and professional level. This balancing act has not only demonstrated my ability to manage diverse commitments effectively but has also pushed me to excel in both areas. It stands as a powerful reminder of what perseverance and dedication can achieve. My time spent at McDonald's has filled me with both gratitude and happiness. This is due to my McDonalds journey offering me invaluable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and adaptability. With that though, i'd like to give a massive thank you to everyone who's been part of my incredible journey. Your encouragement, support and teamwork have been the backbone of my experience. As I move on to the next chapter of my career with Pizza Hut and Yum! Brands, I want to acknowledge the deep impact that the Pizza Hut Canada team has had on me, both personally and professionally. This chapter has transformed me as a human being in a short span of 1.5 years. While I can write essays about my innumerable learnings, here are the 3 biggest lessons that I will always keep with me : 1. Leading with Heart From this diverse team and its passionate leaders, I learned what it truly means to Lead with Heart. Leading with Smart (intellect) and Courage are skills that I have honed through my entire career, but I often had my personal 'walls' up when I showed up at work. As someone who has faced difficult personal challenges at several points in their life, I hesitated to truly open up about my personal truth at the workplace - but this team broke down my walls and challenged me to connect with each and every person at the workplace, with raw and authentic vulnerability. Here I found the strength to openly share my personal stories, with all the good, bad and ugly chapters - and show up as a 'whole' human being and not just a professional colleague. I learned the art of connecting personally with people and learning their stories, and how these connections pave the way for any meaningful transformation that I want to bring about for my teams. I learned to share sorrows and not just joys, shortcomings and not just strengths - celebrating both the downs and ups of life with pride and humility. 2. The Importance of Emotional Self-Regulation To be an impactful communicator, I learned that healthy regulation of my own emotions, especially during moments of high pressure, tight deadlines, unpopular decisions and business turbulence is paramount. We look to our leaders for verbal and non-verbal cues and this can significantly impact psychological safety and trust at the workplace. Our lifelong personal experiences unconsciously influence how we react or respond to different triggers, and how we behave using certain mental templates at the workplace - especially during stressful times. Through my personal journey with therapy and unwavering openness to feedback, I am committed to building awareness of my triggers and templates, and improving my emotional self-regulation and interpersonal communication skills. 3. The Power of Entrepreneurship and Frontline teams Through this role, I met with incredible franchise partners and their frontline restaurant teams who bring our brand to life in their stores every single day. I learned how the true heart of our business beats not in our boardrooms but in our restaurants. I learned how to partner with cross-functional teams to drive our business forward, upholding true partnership and proactive engagement with our Franchise community. I am excited to continue supporting our Franchise partners and Restaurant team members as I move into my next role. Team Pizza Hut Canada - you will be missed ! 💖
