For example, atrial fibrillation (AFib) raises a person's risk for stroke by 500%, according to the National Stroke Association. This is because AFib can cause a blood clot leading to stroke. We utilized 4D flow CMR to better understand and characterize the hemodynamics and anatomy of a patient with complex congenital heart disease with Fontan palliation. The entire LV has become a sink, siphoning blood from the systemic RV during systole compromising cardiac output . Here is where 4D flow imaging becomes very hand when conventional 2D CMR flows and volumes are not just enough.
