Looking ahead to the Summit of the Future in September 2024, the question of what kind of world we leave to our descendants concerns us all. UNDP's Signals Spotlight identifies some of the areas where our legacy to future generations is in doubt – and asks what that means for development. #FutureofDevelopment #SocialInnovation https://lnkd.in/eetiWBN7

Why am I a pragmatic optimist? Because people generally pay most attention to the future they consider most likely or plausible, but actually “the most important future is the future the greatest number of people believe the most... the future on which they are basing their decisions and actions.” The UNDP Signals Report 2024 points out, that hope is central to imagining, emphasising and creating the world we want to live it. https://lnkd.in/dnkXUeRn

🤔Is there another way the world 🌍 could be run? And in the face of so much global turmoil, how can we make the future fairer? In 2020, the United Nations turned 75 and marked the occasion by starting a global conversation about hopes and fears for the future. This was the beginning of a process that would eventually lead to the convening of the #SummitOfTheFuture, a major event this September, which will take place at UN 🇺🇳 Headquarters, just before the annual high-level debate of the General Assembly. The Summit of the Future is a chance to get back on track. It will result in a "Pact for the Future" with five chapters on: 1. Sustainable development ♻️ 🌱 and financing for development 📈. 2. International peace 🕊️ and security. 3. Science🔬 , technology and innovation and 💻 digital cooperation (leading to "The Global Digital Compact"). 4. Youth 🧒🏾 and future Generations (leading to "The Declaration on Future Generations"). 5. Transforming global governance 🌐. Negotiations are underway, co-facilitated by Namibia 🇳🇦 and Germany 🇩🇪, Zambia 🇿🇲 and Sweden 🇸🇪 as well as Jamaica 🇯🇲 and the Netherlands 🇳🇱. The event will consist of sessions and plenaries based around the five main tracks and other topics that cut across all of the work of the UN 🇺🇳, including human rights, gender equality and the climate crisis. 👉🏾 What is in for Africa? ✅ The Global governance reform aims towards a more just and equitable international system, it is crucial to push for appropriate African representation. ✅ Boost for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). ✅ Effectively tackling climate 🌱 crisis of which Africa is disproportionately affected despite having caused it to a much smaller amount than other parts of the world. Here is more on what you can expect from this once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape #OurCommonFuture: https://lnkd.in/dAxW5YrU Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany Germany in the UN #SummitOfTheFuture #AfricanRepresentation #WorldPolitics #Peace #Stability #NewYork #SustainableDevelopment #PactForTheFuture #GlobalDigitalCompact #DeclarationOnFutureGenerations

🌍 Sustainable Development in the UNECE region: facing a headwind but still determined. With the resounding impacts of the pandemic, the war against Ukraine, climate change, high interest rates and inflation, efforts to fulfil the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are facing strong headwinds, globally and in the region of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The latest figures revealed in this year's report on SDG progress in the UNECE Region paint a clear picture of the obstacles posed by these crises. Only 20 targets are on course to be met by 2030, a decline from 21 targets last year and 26 the year before. 🌱 As our Executive Secretary Tatiana Molcean puts it, “The alarm bells continue to ring louder the closer we get to 2030.” With the Summit of the Future (https://lnkd.in/geYthrsx) approaching in September, we must urgently intensify our efforts to guide development in the right direction. Our report was the main source of quantitative evidence for this week’s Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, (https://lnkd.in/dgNN_NQN), informing the debate by illustrating where the region stands in fulfilling the 2030 Agenda. Our SDG expert Andres Vikat unveiled the report to the participants assembled in Geneva on Wednesday, showing how the figures can empower us to identify critical areas requiring unified action, including poverty alleviation, gender equality, education, health, environmental sustainability, economic resilience, and promoting peace and partnerships. 🌟 Despite persistent challenges, there are reasons for optimism. The report highlights advances in poverty reduction, gender equality, and healthcare access. However, the pace of progress remains inadequate, requiring focused efforts. 🤝 The goals may be ambitious, but they are not out of reach. They remain our guiding star, providing us with hope and steering our actions to shape our collective future. 💡 Full report is available here: https://lnkd.in/giR36dsq. #RFSD2024 #SDGs #Sustainability #UNECE

We always say in official statistics that without evidence, decision-makers are flying blind. Nowehere is this more true than with the complex, sometimes even opaque #sdgs. Our 5th annual progress report helps distill the key messages by assessing the main trends at the regional level with a ‘traffic lights’ system: 🚦green if we’re on track; yellow if we’re getting there but too slowly; and red if we’re headed in the wrong direction. Check it out and see where we need to redouble our efforts to get there by 2030!

With many of its influential business leaders unified under the goal of driving societal impact, Africa's potential for sustainable development is more pronounced than ever. The Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC), developed from a collaboration between the United Nations Global Compact and BCG, is a key component of this mission. Beginning with climate change and gender equity, the coalition is leveraging its collective strength to tackle pressing challenges in Africa and across the world. "Africa Rising: The ABLC's Collaborative Blueprint for a Greener, More Equitable Future" explores how BCG has supported the ABLC in its strides to propel positive change: https://lnkd.in/eGApEueV.
