Protect Our Pubs A year has passed since the tragic demolition of the historic Crooked House pub, and the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is urging the new government to take meaningful action. Despite planning laws supposedly defending pubs from conversion or demolition without permission since 2017, the system clearly falls short in enforcement. This lapse in oversight allowed the Crooked House to be demolished rapidly after a devastating fire, without the necessary planning consent, sparking widespread outrage. In response to this, I've seen CAMRA tirelessly support local campaigners and work with government bodies to bolster protections for pubs. Their efforts to get more local pubs statutorily listed in the West Midlands is a commendable step, but there's an urgent need for nationwide policy enhancement. The recurring issue of pubs being unlawfully demolished or converted is a stark reminder that current measures aren't enough to safeguard these cultural landmarks. The new government has a critical opportunity to right these wrongs. By strengthening planning protections and ensuring stringent enforcement, we can preserve the rich heritage pubs represent for our communities.
