IT'S NOT THE END OF TYPHOON YAGI One month after Typhoon Yagi made landfall, it has still left devastation in communities whose lives have been upended and who urgently need specialist assistance. Tuyên Quang, where our school building projects are located, has also suffered severe damage, particularly at Phúc Ninh and Hưng Lợi kindergartens. Classrooms have been ruined, furniture is missing, and even the kitchen has been swept away and destroyed. We are calling for support to replace deteriorated kitchen equipment and provide classroom essentials to help restore a sense of normalcy and security for the children. It is crucial to refurbish and create a new environment for kindergartens affected by the typhoon, like those in Tuyên Quang. Mosaic Market Chiang Mai, a social enterprise operating in Thailand, is collecting essentials to send to partners and the community impacted by the flooding in Northern Thailand. Next week, we will be bringing relief aid with the donated items. -------------------------- The Freedom Story, an organisation operating in Chiang Rai, was significantly impacted. The Freedom Story operates to prevent child exploitation in Thailand through educational scholarships and additional resources for children at risk. The severe flooding last week has left areas devastated in the aftermath as waters recede. Their released public statement: 'This has left many families and students in our programs at heightened risk of trafficking and exploitation. According to a recent article by Kajiado News Update (https://lnkd.in/d3prA6Dz ) half of the students in Kajiado are at risk of dropping out of school if feeding programs are suspended. Kajiado, an arid area plagued by drought, relies heavily on pastoralism. The increasing occurrences of drought have left many children vulnerable to hunger, leading directly to school dropouts. Feeding programs established by the government and NGOs like ours have been crucial in keeping Kajiado's learners in class. However, a recent report by WHO, cited in the article, highlights that government feeding programs are now at risk due to the government's planned budget cuts. Currently, our feeding program supports 78,168 students, covering about 48% of the schools in Kajiado. Despite our efforts, 52% of children in the county are still at risk of starvation and school dropout. Our feeding program has become a lifeline for Kajiado's learners, and we urgently need support from donors and well-wishers to continue and expand our efforts. We are becoming increasingly aware of the devastating effects of climate change on the people and communities we support. In Kenya, our programmes are centred in Voi, an area which has seen a dramatic reduction in rainfall over the past few years, impacting not only the elephants in the neighbouring national park but also people’s ability to grow crops to feed their families and/ or sell for income. In contrast, the recent devastating floods in Kenya led to many of the families our partner organisation, Dadashi, supports having their homes in the slums washed away and one of our scholars in Thika’s family house was destroyed by the floods, and he lost all his school uniform and school items. Fortunately, we were able to replace the lost school items but this is a small gesture in an otherwise disastrous situation. Schools throughout the country also reopened 2 weeks late due to the floods, causing disruption to millions of children’s education. We have also seen a dramatic increase in mentions of the effects of climate change on household incomes, leading to inability to pay school fees, in the application forms we receive.
