In public health people refer to the social determinants of health when considering the multiple factors that impact overall health. Likewise, in education, children are unable to achieve their full academic and social potential unless their overall state of well-being is taken into account including: 🍅Food 🚐Transportation 🏫Before & afterschool care 🤗Social-emotional health Community schools, a concept that started in 1973 when the Black Panthers founded the first Community School in Oakland, have been revitalized and are spreading across the United States. Community schools partner with local organizations who provide mental health support, food, academic help and after-school programs, among other resources. The selection of the most appropriate services is community-led with students, staff and caregivers providing input. While children benefit immensely, so do their caregivers. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child and community schools create that community of support. This week I'll be answering the question: How do community schools support students and caregivers? I'd love to hear what you think! Please tag an expert or comment. Kids need a supportive school environment which includes accessible behavioral health services. Currently, CBO compensation in SBBH averages below the 10th percentile of salaries for clinical social workers in the DC market. We must make these jobs more attractive and sustainable, especially during a workforce shortage. 𝙒𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝. The Strengthening Families through Behavioral Health Coalition [and the Fair Budget Coalition] call on the District to maintain and expand critical investments to School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) in FY25 by increasing compensation for community-based clinicians. If we care about students attending–and thriving in–school, DC must invest in School-Based Behavioral Health. #DCBudget #TeamSBBH #mentalhealth #publicschools #washingtond #SafetyIs

Libraries across the U.S. are now offering programs that cater to both the mind and body. Public health initiatives are integrating into library services, providing a range of activities from fitness classes to discussions on mental well-being and loneliness. The best part? These offerings are accessible to everyone and often come at no cost. For many individuals, these library visits become pivotal moments in their health journey. Some library patrons have taken significant steps towards their well-being after utilizing services like the blood pressure monitors, prompting overdue visits to their physicians. These libraries serve as pillars of community health. For example, in central Texas, the Libraries for Health program is dedicated to promoting mental wellness and health equity. Program organizers emphasize that this initiative complements existing mental health services, particularly addressing the scarcity of resources in rural areas. It's a community-driven approach to bridging gaps in mental health support across the state. On this side of the border, do you see libraries playing in the community well-being space in this way? Or does it represent an untapped opportunity? #wellbeing #library #space #community

So interesting - so critical
Are you involved in designing and delivering services and supports to young children and their families? A new paper shares valuable insights to inform your work and help reconfigure #EarlyYears environments 📑 https://bit.ly/3YJ8LDE ‘Core Care Conditions for Children and Families: Implications for Policy and Practice’ by Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) Senior Research Fellow Dr Tim Moore explores how large-scale improvements in child and family outcomes will only be possible when the core care conditions that children and families need to flourish are met. #CoreCareConditions are the key features of the social and physical environments in which young children and their families live that are important for optimal development and functioning. The paper notes early childhood and family support services can reduce some of the social disadvantages experienced by some families but will never be enough to reduce early years inequities at a population level. It proposes we look beyond service delivery, broadening our scope to ensure all children and their families enjoy the conditions known to lead to positive outcomes – right from the start in a child’s #First1000 days of life. This paper draws on a literature review conducted as part of the #BetterStart Project, a collaboration between Better Health Network and the Centre for Community Child Health, with funding from the City of Port Phillip. It also incorporates ARACY’s wellbeing framework, #TheNest, in the child outcomes at the heart of the Core Care Conditions.
