We need WORLD GOVERNMENT NOW to save us from ourselves!!! "Most people do not benefit from wars or from degradation of our global environment. Allowing them to continue year after year carries existential risk through unconstrained conflict or environmental catastrophe. The solution is to create global governance that is fit to handle modern challenges – governance that is effective, equitable, accountable to the people, and strictly limited to global issues that are beyond the reach of individual nations, such as the planetary environment, pandemics, and war. We know how to do this. The European Union provides one example, the United States of America another. In 1788, George Mason, speaking against the state of Virginia joining the newly proposed U.S. federal government, asked: “Is it to be supposed that one National Government will suit so extensive a country, embracing so many climates, and containing inhabitants so very different in manners, habits, and customs?” As it turns out, yes – despite many challenges, under its federal government the U.S. has grown to be one of the richest and most powerful countries on Earth. The European Union, too, has had its challenges, but is unquestionably preferable to the two world wars that catalyzed its creation."

We were at the United Nations headquarters in NYC last week for the 9th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals. Did you know that in April, 91 written statements were filed with the International Court of Justice (ICJ)—the highest number filed in its history—for its advisory proceedings on the Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change? Last year, the Government of Vanuatu led an initiative to table a resolution requesting the ICJ’s advisory opinion on the matter, backed by over 130 countries at the 77th UN General Assembly. While advisory opinions are not legally binding, the ICJ’s opinion is expected to shape international climate action and the developing climate litigation landscape. The #EuropeanGreenDeal was never meant to be an environmental wishful thinking. But a plan to accompany and manage the inevitable and disrupting transformation that #climateemergency brings to our economies and society. It is still an unfinished business and cannot depend on partisan politicking. Good regulation and its effective implementation, massive investments in clean solutions in all sectors and notably in skills as well as a determined European level leadership is still highly necessary. We support fron @EUase the call “A deal is a deal” from the @ClubofRome.
A DEAL IS A DEAL | Over 250 policymakers, researchers, business and NGO leaders have signed a call to action for all parties of the newly elected European Parliament to prioritise implementation of the #EuropeanGreenDeal. The Club of Rome has coordinated a call to action with two of the Systems Transformation Hub partners –Climate-KIC and Metabolic –as a reminder that the European Green Deal is Europe's North Star for an ambitious and equitable transition pathway - even more relevant today than at its time of adoption. 🚨 NEW EPISODE | The Future of the European Green Deal In this second episode of Policy Crossroads, Brooke Moore and Garvan Walshe from the EPC engage in dialogue with MEP Sara Matthieu from the Greens – European Free Alliance, exploring the some key challenges with regard to the implementation of the Green Deal during the next mandate. The exchange revolves around the following questions: Where does the disconnect between the EU and public sentiment lie regarding environmental policies? How can the EU bridge this gap effectively? Are objections from the far right solely aimed at the agricultural sector, or do they reflect a wider criticism of the European economic system? What is the biggest challenge to implementing the Green Deal post-elections? How can the Green Deal involve citizens in the transition instead of imposing changes on them? Is there space for increased citizen participation to overcome obstacles and foster inclusion? Sara Matthieu argues that “we are not going to have this big renovation that we need if member states do not put the money where their mouth is”. Watch it here 👇

At the Climate Governance Initiative Greece we are delighted to announce an academic partnership with the Perry World House of the University of Pennsylvania and to welcome a multidisciplinary team of four Student Fellows in a year long research project, Florence Onyiuke, Michal Wyrebkowski, Euel Kebebew and Inaya Zaman They will work alongside our member companies to develop a practical and strategic business case for #climate action, emphasizing the economic and growth benefits for #SMEs and offering insights for policymakers and large companies alike. This includes an exploration of the financial and operational implications of climate compliance, insights how SMEs can leverage action to drive #sustainablegrowth and reduce costs, analysis of the potential drawbacks for companies that fail to comply, including reduced market relevance, limited contract opportunities, and overall stunted business growth; and a review of successful climate mobilization models from other regions and sectors, identifying actionable strategies for relevant parties. Expected outcome: A curated set of best practices that can serve as foundation for SMEs looking to begin or expand their climate action efforts, tailored to meet the objectives of t government policymakers, SMEs, and large companies. The Green Deal is one of the best policies that came out of the EU in the last few years. Just like the New Deal was a pivotal policy moment for the US to come out of a massive economic crisis in the 1930s, so is the Green Deal for Europe in relation to a worsening climate and biodiversity crisis. It needs to be implemented ambitiously to safeguard what we hold dear and near. #EuropeanGreenDeal #climateaction #people #nature

As a participant in the Salzburg Global Corporate Governance Forum, I'm deeply engaged in our exploration of climate and nature governance. A crucial question emerging is: Can new approaches to governance or collaborative structures enhance outcomes? We're grappling with how boards can effectively respond to multiple drivers that require companies to address challenges and seize opportunities in the climate and nature space. It's fascinating to see how this ties into discussions on the profound effects corporate decisions have on a wide range of stakeholders - from future generations to communities and workers across global supply chains. The complexity of these issues demands innovative thinking. I'm particularly intrigued by the potential for new collaborative structures that might allow boards to more nimbly address climate and nature crises while balancing diverse stakeholder needs. This forum is proving to be an invaluable platform for exchanging ideas on how governance can evolve to meet these pressing challenges. Looking forward to further insights as we continue to unpack these critical topics through connections, collaborations and partnerships.
On Monday, we welcomed board directors, academics, and subject-matter specialists for the start of our latest program of the Salzburg Global Corporate Governance Forum. This year's topic is "How Can Corporate Governance Address the Accelerating Challenges of the Climate and Nature Crises?" Our partners include CLP and PwC. This year's program is also sponsored by Nancy Voorhees - The Alan M. and Nathalie P. Voorhees Fund.
