Hiring someone to manage your social media and hiring someone to generate leads with social media are 100% different scopes and skillsets. Hiring someone to run your ads and hiring someone to fix your broken offer are 100% different scopes and skillsets. Hiring a coach and hiring a therapist are 100% different scopes and skillsets. Hiring out a website build and ranking your website are 100% different scopes and skillsets. Hiring a marketer and hiring a magician are 100% different scopes and skillsets.

If you’re hiring an in-house videographer at your college, and the salary range is $40k-$50k, we need to talk. This is not an entry level position. If you want someone to just take orders and push buttons like a glorified intern, then maybe. But if you want someone who knows what they’re doing, and can take ownership of the role and lead creatively with intention and a strong marketing mindset, you need to pay them appropriately. I personally wouldn’t feel right paying anyone less than $70k for those expectations. Add to that the benefits package and other costs of managing an employee, and you’re likely exceeding 6 figures. When it makes sense to, invest in in-house talent. They’re super valuable. But there are instances where hiring an external video partner is the more cost-effective option, provided you’re not taking a “random acts of one-off videos” approach. If you find yourself on the fence between in-house and external talent, reach out to me. I can show you what a year’s worth of video content could look like as an external partner, or I can refer you to some talented folks who want to work in-house. Both are good options. Just don’t assume that hiring staff is the cheapest route.

I can't emphasize this enough, if you're new or a young professional getting into the creative industry, work in agencies or small businesses for as long as possible. The years of experience are simply worth more, which is why big corporations routinely steal creatives out of the agency space to bring them in-house. Why is that? Sitting in multiple job seats, working with clients across different industries and sizes, non-linear career growth, and navigating the highs and lows of the service industry—you're earning every single buck coming your way. Fortune 500 hiring managers are going to hedge their bets on the creative who has successfully built, grown and managed 10+ brands a year in a variety of industries and problems, versus someone who has worked on a single brand per year. Agency and small business-honed creatives are battle-tested and more likely to be future-proofed. I want all of my creative peers to get paid one day, but too many of you are searching for a cushy job too early. Your dream creative director/strategy director/brand director/CMO job is coming. Get there 10 years earlier because you invested in experience now.

Yesterday I was asked a question I hadn't thought about in awhile: "What is it that you want to do long-term?" Thanks to the power (invasiveness?) of Zoom, I was able to find the transcript of my answer: "I think if you were to ask me two years ago, it would be different than now. When I was working as a full-time designer, I'd say my 10 year goal was to be some kind of Creative Director. I want to be overseeing a team and I could definitely see myself going that route, but I moved into being an Account Executive in a sales role -- it's so much networking and customer support and just getting to talk to people and do THIS for living. And it's been so fulfilling. I was just kind of missing the people element. I know that I always want to work in sports in some capacity, and working at Slate has allowed me to do that but also meet more people than I ever did actually working for a team... the only reason I felt comfortable going into a sales role was that now I get to help my former counterparts onboard a tool that I loved so much and used everyday. So yeah, it definitely is a bucket filler working at a company like this and being fully remote, and really getting to prioritize my time outside of work." Okay, so I cut out most of the filler words (I apparently don't talk as concisely as I thought I did), but y'all get the point. I'll say it loud enough for the people in the back: DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND LOVE WHAT YOU DO. FILL THAT BUCKET. That's it. That's the tweet.
