💡 Attending the ALL IN Conference in Montreal this past week was both inspiring and troubling. Engaging with leaders in IT, executives, VCs, and fellow tech startups, all driven by the transformative potential of AI, reaffirmed a key insight: Canada is at a crossroads.. With AI accelerating at a breakneck pace, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce's recent BDL report warns us—Canada's productivity is in crisis. As companies worldwide harness AI, we must act now. Faster adoption of generative AI could be crucial in reversing the country’s economic decline. Canada lags behind other nations in productivity growth, which poses a risk to its global competitiveness. 🤯 Almost 3 in 4 Canadian businesses (73%) have not even considered using Gen AI yet... Enterprises and governments alike showcased how AI adoption can transform sectors and drive economic growth. Let’s turn this tipping point into an opportunity to reshape our economy. 🌍 The Global AI Investment Landscape: A Look at 2024-2025 Fascinating to see how the global AI investment landscape is evolving. The numbers coming in for 2024 and projections for 2025 paint a compelling picture of accelerated commitment to artificial intelligence across major economies. - The UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has announced a £300M investment specifically targeting AI safety research and compute capacity through 2025. - In a significant move, the EU has allocated €7B for AI innovation and infrastructure as part of their updated Digital Europe Programme, aiming to boost European AI competitiveness. - China's continued momentum in AI development has led to projected investments reaching $50B in 2024 alone, keeping them on track for their ambitious 2030 goals. What's particularly interesting is where this money is flowing - beyond pure research into real-world applications. AI safety, healthcare solutions, and climate tech are emerging as key priority areas. These investments reflect a maturing understanding of AI's potential - moving from hype to strategic implementation. But the question remains: how will these massive commitments translate into practical innovations? Today at ALL IN the AI event in Montreal, industry leaders highlighted a big problem: Canada has top AI talent but struggles to turn that talent into successful businesses. Here are 3 lessons I learned today: 1. Canada has top AI talent: Our AI talent pool is rated A+, which means we are as good as the best in the world. 2. Commercialization is a challenge: Despite having great talent, we are not good at turning that talent into marketable products. We got a D- rating for commercialization. 3. Brain drain is real: Top researchers are leaving Canada for the U.S. and China, where their ideas can become products faster. I'm curious if you've noticed this also? How can we make our commercialisation game better?
