Are you interested in the quality of the design research that we do? Then this might be the place for you... Romain Pinquié, Jaap Daalhuizen, Joshua D. Summers and I are in the process of developing a proposal for a special interest group focused on design research quality. Our initial goals are to: >> Identify key research quality needs within the The Design Society and Design Research Society (DRS) communities, leveraging the work already done as part of the Design Research Notes and Benchmarks in Design Research to develop an actionable set of research quality projects for the next 2-5 years. >> Bring together research quality initiatives across the field to provide a more coherent focal point for these discussions as well as more accessible resources for the community. >> Build a common community around research quality that links Design Society and DRS researchers. Ultimately we want this to be a group that platforms quality discussions, enables researchers to find what they need to improve the quality for their work, and generally helps the community! If you would be interested in this project, as a contributor or as someone who might use such resources e.g., to help in their PhD, in study design, or just taking your work to the next level then... Email Romain Pinquié and I and we can keep you in the loop! romain.pinquie@grenoble-inp.fr philip.cash@northumbria.ac.uk #designresearch #designresearchmethods #researchmethodology #interdisciplinaryresearch #researchquality #researchethics Academy for Design Innovation Management Design Council

Tomorrow, at RMIT Europe in Barcelona, Spain. ‘BUILDING AUDIENCES — Research, communicate, act’ is an investigation of the imperative of linking academic research in design with various publics to inspire action, exploring how urban research holds the power to not only inform but also to spark change. The study unfolds through the lens of the author’s extensive career, spanning academia, publishing, and curation. Reflecting on key projects, the narrative distills individual agency within collaborative processes, examines negotiation in a public context, and traces an evolution in engaging diverse “publics.” ‘Research, communicate, act’ proposes a transition from a focus solely on the disciplinary aspects of architecture and design to addressing urgent societal challenges. It explores the architect’s role as an agent in building trust within disempowered public spheres, emphasizing collaborative efforts and exchanges. The findings contribute to understanding the transformative potential of communicating academic research to wider publics through publications, exhibitions, public installations, and diverse formats. The narrative underscores the necessity of design to engage with experts, scholars, and practitioners from various fields, forging connections between design, science, and politics. ‘BUILDING AUDIENCES — Research, communicate, act’ claims the architect’s role as editor, curator, and educator, capable of pushing, persuading, and directing efforts towards pieces that inspire action. In these unprecedented times of overwhelming challenges, including the climate crisis, successive humanitarian crises, and the pressing need to develop more liveable and just cities, it is crucial for architecture and design to engage the “publics” in decision-making processes that shape the world we desire. ‘BuILDING AUDIENCES — Research, communicate, act’ invites individuals to confront discomfort and act, offering valuable insights into the dynamic interplay of interdisciplinary collaboration, doubt, conviction, trust, and the evolving role of design. Knowledge is a catalyst, and we’re on a mission to ensure it catalyzes transformation. Let’s act.

Next week, I'll be at the VALA conference in Melbourne speaking about Libraries, Technology, and the Future! The once and future librarian. Librarians are vanguards of infotech. Struggling with legacy systems accumulated alongside precious collections of books, journals, tools, and toys. Watching waves of uncertainty in a world newly obsessed with AI, we may well wonder what’s next. Let’s pause and reflect on the journey that got us here. Let’s examine the messy middle of our present. Let’s do more than imagine where to go now. Let’s re-make the future. Let’s iterate, and re-iterate. The Open Practice Library has no books, no bricks, no mortar. It has no systems to manage loans. It’s a collection of practices, open to all to use, to study, to change, and to share. In this closing address, Donna Benjamin will invite attendees to take the first step into their own future, empowered by their own legacy, enabled by open practices, and fueled with optimistic intent for what’s possible. https://lnkd.in/guzWZECA

"Utopias are laboratories for imagining new ways to be in the world. They are also moral dilemmas. Presenting us with scenarios to test what we value. [...] The importance of actively asking ourselves what we value, what we hold up as our ideal in the contemporary moment, cannot be overstated. Especially in the in-between times. During a cultural interregnum, the active pursuit of utopia is not a vehicle to ferry us to a destination but an iterative process of discovery into what that destination might look like. How do we build worlds of tomorrow? Can we normalize the pursuit of utopia? We once did. [...] Have we forgotten how to imagine what a better future can look like? It is healthy to think about the future. To struggle with it, to contemplate it, to safely build up and tear down models—both literal and figurative—for the kind of society we strive to become. These are acts of design." (Seth Goldeberg) "... as the future hasn't happened yet, I guess that's up to you..."
