🌍 Our Kenya team recently visited Digital Green #Ethiopia, connecting with colleagues and learning from impactful project sites. From meeting with #farmers and youth groups at their nursery sites to observing a Farmer.Chat demo and attending a video dissemination session, it was an inspiring exchange. They also met with women from Self-Help Groups and witnessed Climate Smart Agriculture practices like vermicomposting. The visit fostered meaningful cross-border collaboration, capped off with a celebration at our Ethiopia office for a teammate’s birthday! 🎉

💜 🇰🇪 Agri-jobs for the Youth in Kenya: A Joint Effort In 2022, we embarked on an incredible adventure in Kenya. Alongside our sister company, Green Rhino - Kenya, and under the programme Agri-Jobs for Youth by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, we collaborated with the youth and women in Kisumu, Vihiga, and Siaya counties. 🚀 Our ultimate goal was to engage young people and women in exploring agricultural opportunities in Western Kenya while addressing the challenges faced by the region's population. 💦 These challenges include financial constraints, water scarcity, poverty and inequality, high youth unemployment, the impacts of climate change, economic downturns, drought, and conflicts. 👨🌾 During a recent field visit, Bert-Jan Ottens visited youth centres that are already making a difference by implementing the knowledge and skills provided by this program, from seedling and harvesting techniques to market entry, water management, and, most importantly, the opportunities that organic agriculture offers to the youth in the region. 👉 Some direct results of these efforts are employment, increased production, better adaptation to changes, water management, and women entrepreneurship. These field visits were part of the first-ever ReGen55 Gathering in Kenya. (More details on this exciting event are coming soon!). Learn more about youth organisations in Kenya in the video! Imagine a place where innovation, sustainability, and community empowerment thrive together to reshape the future? That’s exactly what most of us want right? We recently had the pleasure of attending the launch of the masterplan for Kenya’s first Social Innovation Eco Village, developed by our partner, EmpServe Kenya. This project, once completed, will empower hundreds of people annually, particularly in Kajiado county which is one of the underserved regions of Kenya. In the coming days, we will delve deeper into why this project is so close to our hearts and its significance in the fight for sustainability and innovation. Stay tuned as we share the potential this project holds for Kenya’s future, especially in empowering marginalized communities with the tools necessary to fight climate change at grassroots level. In the meantime, we invite you to visit EmpServe’s website to learn more about the project and explore how you can be part of the sustainable future they are building. https://lnkd.in/g_MzqUh2 #sustainability #climatechange #innovation #climateadaptation

If you haven't read "Where Strategic Philanthropy Went Wrong" in Stanford Social Innovation Review by Mark Kramer and Steve Phillips, you should, link is below. While the article focuses on impact in the U.S. context, many of its wise reflections are relevant to global philanthropy and speaks to the exciting change afoot in the nonprofit sector as well, not to mention offering humility in the face of disappointing results. The premise of the article is that ultimately philanthropy is and will be limited if we trust those giving the funding more than those seeking funding to improve their communities and their lives. We have architected the nonprofit sector in a hierarchy, which, say the authors, can be effective sometimes, but not always, and we are losing a lot where we are not being effective. I would add that operational inefficiencies that require a ton of work by fund seekers to prove and justify their ideas and their impact in advance and beyond reasonable expectations, given limited resources at the outset of their hopeful journey is also a rate limiting factor. It’s like pressuring an athlete to win golds while holding back the nutrients they need to build up to peak performance. At World Connect, Inc. we know how much ready capacity is poised for success and we are dedicated to activating power inside communities with access to transformational capital that can drive insider-led development. Just yesterday we received an update via our Rwanda country director Rhoda Kanyesigye about an improved water solution built by a community in three months Jali, Rwanda, just outside of Kigali, is not connected to municipal water. Women trek dangerous terrain to access water, putting them at risk for injury, rape, and gender based violence. With an investment of $4,700 from World Connect and $650 from the community, in three months, there is a new water source. #braggingrights ✔️ easier access to clean water ✔️ safety for women ✔️ more time for work and school "Individuals” as the authors write, “even those living in poverty, are able to improve their lives with modest amounts of unrestricted cash payments and support from their peers...individuals—not only social entrepreneurs or philanthropists—must become our social-sector heroes." 👊🏾 to the *hero* of this project, Jean-Claude SHEMA. The authors suggest that “funders spend less money chasing the latest social innovation, attempting to scale organizations to national impact, or embarking on grand visions to solve complex problems and instead redirect those funds toward peer-driven change…” “We must support people in finding their own solutions, boosting their sense of agency, and supporting them in building their own communities.” “The funder’s role is to create and sustain the conditions through which stakeholders can generate their own solutions." And that is why we are: #activatingpowerinsidecommunities https://lnkd.in/ekzCQDAQ
Success! Sometimes there's simply no better illustration of impact than a #beforeandafter visual. In Jali, #Rwanda, just outside Kigali, women have had to scale unsafe terrain for water. With an investment of $4,700 from World Connect and an investment of $650 from the community of Jali, an improved, safer water solution rose in three months. ✔️ clean water, improved health ✔️ safety for women ✔️ more time for school and work Congratulations to Jean-Claude SHEMA and the community of Jali for this accomplishment. And thank you to our country director in Rwanda Rhoda Kanyesigye for this striking testament to the power of our work. #powerinsidecommunities

Earlier today, more than 20,000 health workers were discussing #Climate and #Health at #TeachToReach. Beatrice Icibo, Team Lead, with the Kakita Initiative for Womens' Development-KIWOD in Eastern Uganda shared her experience of #ClimateChange: "This time round in the Eastern Uganda the mango fruit season was very short, most of it rotten as crops were still at the infant stages. The mango fruits would help the families substitute as a day's meal's meal. This led to the rural community going farming on empty stomachs all day long and having one meal a day in the evening What have we done to better prepare our communities for the next time this happens? We have embarked on greening our community environment by distributing to them fast growing fruit trees." Join colleagues from all over the world to meet, network, and learn at Teach to Reach. Share your experience and earn recognition as a Teach to Reach Contributor. Together, we learn from each other to catalyze change at local level. The following illustrative poster was created based on the knowledge systems that Pokot Women from West Pokot use towards establishing nurseries. There are several innovative mechanisms that ensures effective soil and water conservation. These knowledge systems are an important step towards climate resilience.
🌳 Growing a greener tomorrow, one sapling at a time! This new poster provides a simple guide to setting up your own on-farm tree nursery, inspired by the incredible work of women in Kamatira in West Pokot, Kenya. Pokot women have established on-farm tree nurseries with the support and guidance from the Pastoral Communities Empowerment Programme (PACEP), Women4Biodiversity's restoration site partner in Kenya, to restore the Kamatira forest and generate additional income. This poster, created by Women4Biodiversity, highlights the contributions of women in Kamatira in forest restoration. It has been created for use at the West Pokot community level. Please share this guide to amplify women's stories in conservation because #genderisabiodiversityissue. For more information on the restoration process in Kenya, please visit: https://lnkd.in/drVJ6kS4 🎨 Digital artist: Deepika Nandan, Visual Communications Officer, Women4Biodiversity #RestoreHERights 📢 Heads up: We will be at #COP16Colombia to discuss the restoration process in all six women-led restoration initiatives Women4Biodiversity has supported.
