I'm proud of you, as always, Sof. 💭 I've been leading a prominent youth-led and youth-empowerment organization for the last five years. And trust me, I've never encountered or even heard of a single youth-led organization's capacity-building program as a major goal. Don't tell me, how about those trainings. 💭 The trend is all about giving motivation and keep talking you, you are the leader. What a daymare to envision youth leadership without incubating strong youth-led institutions to balance the existing power architecture, that is extremely imbalanced between youth and non-youth actors. 💭 I trust that you'll keep advising them not what anyone loves to hear but what our situation exactly looks like. What it takes to claim youth empowerment in Ethiopia is completely different from what is being imagined. 💭 I would like to know if there is any single international organization that can confidently claim to be the driving force behind the existence of any strong youth-led organization. The third Masterclass session of the SDSN Advocacy programme took place on Friday, March 22. Catherine Busari, LEAP AFRICA's coordinator of programmes, led the first section. She introduced the subject of "Transformative Leadership" to us. She began by enumerating the Ten Perspectives of Leadership offered by LEAP AFRICA, which comprise: 1. Anyone may be a leader. 2. Being a leader is an action, not a status 3. Being a leader is about possibilities Effective leadership is all about making positive changes in society and enhancing the lives of others. 6. Leaders don't do all the work themselves; instead, they share their vision with others and persuade others to pursue positive changes. 5. Any man can lead in different ways in the society. 6. 7. Clear and specific goals characterise leaders utilised ambitions, visions, and goals 8. Respect is owed to effective leaders. 9. Taking certain risks is a must for leadership. 10. To be a leader, one must be self-aware, accountable, self-knowing, and able to listen to and care for others. Anyone can be a leader; it just depends on their personality, regardless of age, tribe, or religion. Goleman lists the following six leadership tenets: Democratic, Affiliate, Visionary, Commanding, Pay setting, and Coaching. The second Charles Nwishuenyi-led workshop covered the "Fundamentals of Proposal Writing and Grant Application." In order to prepare for the interview, the facilitator underlined the importance of conducting research on the grant donor. This included visiting their website to learn about them and their guiding principles and reading through their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). conversing with the potential donor. He also went into detail on creating a budget and outlining exactly how every dollar donated will be used. I feel more secure now that I know I can seek funding from donors to support all of my advocacy initiatives and activities. It was a very insightful session that has helped me advocate for the SDGs. I'm so excited to share insights from my journey at Harvard Business School! Initially, I embarked on this path with the noble intention of making a difference in people's lives through my nonprofit organization (Beellahy Foundation). However, what I've come to realize is that effecting change isn't solely about good intentions; it's about wielding power in the right way. Understanding power dynamics in society is paramount to creating meaningful impact. Power isn't static; it's woven within the way our society works. If we aspire to truly change the world for the better, we must comprehend how power operates and shapes our actions. This understanding is crucial for figuring out how to handle the challenges of changing organizations and society. So, whether you're ready to dive in or taking your time, knowing how power operates is KEY to making a real difference. The relentless pursuit of scale in the NGO sector often leads to the erosion of authenticity and effectiveness. As Anurag Behar insightfully points out, the push for larger numbers—be it geographic coverage or beneficiary count—can result in “fake and flaky” outcomes. The industrial logic of scale doesn’t apply to social impact, where true progress is measured by depth, not breadth. It’s time funders and NGOs alike shift their focus from superficial metrics to genuine, community-driven change. Meet our new community-elected Advisory Council Member, Sujatha Sebastian! Story behind her name:  Most people in my father's family have a first name that starts with S. When my parents named me, my father incorrectly thought that "Sujatha" was the name of a flower in Hindi. However, in my 20s, I met another Sujatha, who taught me that according to Buddhist history, “Sujatha” was the name of the woman who gave Buddha a bowl of rice porridge, helping him to end his six-year journey of asceticism. Where she calls home:  San Francisco area, Northern California, USA. However, I am a New Yorker at heart. All that she has conquered: As the Sr. Director of Leadership Programs at Justice Funders, I currently collaborate with a diverse community of funders, movement groups, and nonprofit organizations to help advance a Just Transition. In addition, I have worked in the nonprofit sector for 20 years across a variety of focus areas including social entrepreneurship, economic development, nonprofit leadership, and network development. I have both launched and worked in start-ups, collaborated with a number of organizations  (both internationally and in the United States), and I have served as a board member.  In addition, I have been lucky enough to coach, advise, and consult with a number of amazing nonprofit leaders. I believe that the sector holds immense potential. I know firsthand how deeply rewarding and challenging it can be to work in this space—particularly as a woman of color. What she loves about OC: I stumbled across the Opportunity Collaboration community for the first time in 2011. 12 Opportunity Collaborations later, this community continues to be one of the most inspirational and dearest to me professionally and personally.
