It helps to make informed decisions and counter misinformation, empowering individuals with the knowledge needed to navigate complex issues. With a call for a significant increase in research budgets, the Research Matters campaign aims to foster innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness across various sectors such as industry, economy, and social development. We call for: 🔵 Increase in R&D investments, reaching over 3% of the GDP within the European Union and throughout all European countries 🔵 Doubling the budget for the EU’s next research programme, FP10, and protecting that budget by ring-fencing it. From groundbreaking advancements in renewable energy technologies to pioneering digital infrastructures and healthcare breakthroughs, Europe has been at the forefront. By investing further in research, we can continue this legacy, driving development and innovation that anticipate and navigate not only the challenges of today but also those of the future. This European-wide campaign is set to mobilise and unify the research and innovation community, aiming to engage with policymakers, stakeholders, and the media. This initiative is crucial for raising awareness about the crucial role of research in sculpting our future and addressing global challenges. What does the future hold for #MSCA? Despite their achievements and popularity, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions are notably absent in recent publications like Mario Draghi's report on EU competitiveness or the mission letters to the EU Commissioners-designate. The MSCA fund excellent research and innovation and equip researchers at all stages of their career with new knowledge and skills, through mobility across borders and exposure to different sectors and disciplines. They also fund the development of excellent doctoral and postdoctoral training programmes and collaborative research projects worldwide. Many EuroTech researchers have benefitted from the programme, not the least through the two #EuroTechPostdoc programmes that have allowed in total 150 postdoctoral fellows to establish their own research lines and receive comprehensive training within the EuroTech Universities. Together with many other R&I organisations, we express our collective concern over this omission, which overlooks the programme’s essential contributions to Europe’s research, innovation and competitiveness. Therefore, we call for the recognition the MSCA programme deserves, alongside an increased budget to unlock its full potential. 📢 Report on European University Alliances - Pilot II released! I am happy to share our recently published “Report on good practices from European University Alliances Projects (pilot II)” This report reviews 22 projects funded under the call H2020-IBA-SwafS-Support-2-2020 (Pilot II) of the Science with and for Society (SwafS) programme of Horizon 2020. It presents tangible progress and good practices achieved in the different areas of institutional change of the European University Alliances projects, with the objective to raise excellence in science and in value creation in the university sector, and to align Member States efforts to increase the sector’s global visibility and competitiveness. With this report, which builds on a previous Progress of University Alliance Projects report on the 17 Pilot I alliances SwafS projects funded under the Horizon 2020 IBASwafS- Support-1-2020 call, we are proud to provide policy feedback and further evidence on the implementation of the ERA Policy Agenda 2022-2024, in particular the ERA Action 13 - Empowering Higher Education Institutions. The European Research Executive Agency (REA) is entrusted by the European Commission with the management of significant parts of the EU Research and Innovation framework programmes. An important part of our work is to provide policy feedback to the Commission and EU citizens, based on our contacts with beneficiaries whose opinions on our actions we value and treasure. Therefore, we put great emphasis on lessons learned from projects, in terms of what works well and what needs improvement. This contributes to improving the design and development of the future research and innovation policy and actions under the framework programme, inspiring transformations at institutional, national, and European level. As a former MSCA fellow, I can attest to the program’s exceptional role in connected work packages across #research 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐦-𝐮𝐩 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫, #dissemination, #management, and #leadership.
