Congratulations to Mitchell Anderson from St Mary MacKillop College, Swan Hill who has been awarded the Fr James Wall Bursary in the Diocese of Ballarat by the Catholic Development Fund. The bursary recognizes Mitchell's outstanding academic achievements, his dedication to his community, and his insatiable curiosity about the world around him. For over 20 years, the Fr James Wall Bursary has empowered young leaders like Mitchell as they move from Yr 10 into senior secondary schooling, encouraging them to continue their journey of personal growth and community involvement. We thank the Catholic Development Fund (CDF) for supporting and honouring Mitchell in this way. 🌍 In the face of a decadelong drought and its consequential economic strains, many families in Nyeri, #Kenya, find themselves unable to afford the essential education their children deserve. It's a heartbreaking reality where admission to high school becomes a bittersweet victory, overshadowed by the financial hardships that make it inaccessible to talented young people. 📚 That’s one of the reasons Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education professor Ndiangui, Dr. Peter Ndiang'ui created the Nyeri Diaspora Leadership Academy. Through donations by Southwest Florida non-profits and individuals, more than 30 #Nyeri children have had their school fees paid for in 2023-24. 🍃 I’m thankful I got to talk to Peter about the work he’s doing, and how he's involving Florida Gulf Coast University students from his #Colloquium classes. ✨ But what struck me most about Peter's story is his sense of purpose and gratitude. In his own words, "You say, ‘you have helped all these kids’ but I think I’m helping myself. It’s me. It is something so nice to be on that side, to be able to give." 💗 As we navigate our own professional journeys, let's take a page from Peter's playbook to channel our resources, networks and expertise towards causes that matter. Peter is creating a world where every young #Kenyan has the opportunity to learn. We can do that, too, by supporting the NDLA and causes like it. 🖋 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eHgUgUb5 #EducationForAll #Leadership #Impact

I've started a scholarship in honor of my father, Dr. Robert Marko, who dedicated his career to social justice, ethics, morality, and pursuing a better world for all people. My father was the head of the Aquinas College theology department, wrote his dissertation on war and peace, and taught every summer at the Catholic University of Lviv in Ukraine before the war. Please consider donating (whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated!). The scholarship will help send future leaders to school who have a demonstrated commitment to the principals my dad taught and social justice issues. It is also tax deductible! Donate here: https://lnkd.in/gjrmukdz Thank you David Weinandy for helping establish this! Aquinas College - Grand Rapids #socialjustice #workforabetterworld #education #morality #ethics

I am amazed at what a single movement can do for non profits, particularly our school. Today is Giving Tuesday and like many organizations, we secured a matching fund of $40,000 to inspire our alumni, current families and alumni parents to give today, and double their dollars. But it's become my favorite day on the giving calendar because of conversations like the one I had with Jack Dowd. Jack graduated from St. Charles in 1949, which makes him 93 years young! He wanted to give his donation over the phone...and also share that Ocala, FL is a great place to live. (*noted!) He said he was happy, healthy and has learned that a long life is about "movement." He has no email address and still uses a flip phone, walks his dog every day and sometimes rides his bike. His biggest tip: don't ever give up driving your car, it limits your freedom! He was sharp as a tack, delightful and witty. These conversations are gifts to those of us on our development team. They remind us of the very personal experience that our alums have with St. Charles, show us the importance of giving back, and are proof that we do, in fact, Build Better Men. What does a campaign like Giving Tuesday mean for St. Charles? It means we can continue developing young men in an all-boys environment, centered around faith and rigorous academics, with the goal of every young man achieving his God-given potential. It means we can accommodate our growing enrollment and the need for additional faculty, staff and classrooms. It means we can invest in emergency equipment for new buildings, refurbishment needs of our historical spaces, weekend junior and senior religious retreats, unique speakers and programs, faculty and staff professional development and more. There's still time to give today and help us "meet the match." Go to: www.scprepgive.org and direct your gift to the annual fund. Wanna help us beat last year's goal? We need 63 givers in this next hour to stay above pace from last year at this time. Alums, please message me if you prefer to give through DAF, check or a gift of stock. #buildingbettermen #todaysboystomorrowsmen. #givingtuesday

Five Substantive Suggestions to Improve the NCEA The National Catholic Education Association could improve its services to Catholic schools in five substantive ways: 1) First, provide benchmarking data for schools by listing out the average salaries for teachers, principals, assistant principals, athletic directors, etc. by region of the country. Most of us are “flying blind” without this data. The NAIS, by comparison, provides this data publicly. We should make this data available for every NCEA member, free of charge. 2) Second, create regional associations. Arlington, VA, N.C.E.A. headquarters, is too remote for most of us to be relevant. But regional associations could provide opportunities for local leadership and encourage networking and collaboration. 3) Third, commit itself to assist schools or dioceses trying to set up ”planned gift” or “legacy” outreaches. We are all trying to raise money through single gifts or monthly donations, but the potential transformational gifts are through wills and estates. The future of our schools depends on finding new revenue to support lagging teacher salaries. This is the path. 4) Fourth, make a full-throated effort to establish and support “principal academies” and mentorship relationships with new and old principals. There simply aren’t enough Catholic school principals, and our schools are in desperate need of good leaders! Our training “method” too often amounts to throwing first year principals into the deep end and then hoping they learn to swim without drowning. 5) Fifth, create a repository of the best rhetoric to discuss the purpose and mission of Catholic schools, and make this available to any Catholic school that needs it. We simply miss the mark here! Too much of our language is functional, not aspirational—and as a result, we don’t “make the case” for Catholic schools as powerfully as we should. Language matters. We don’t prioritize it! The N.C.E.A. could help us do that.

Point three is a huge one. I am a former trusts and estate attorney who now works in planned giving at a major university. It's disheartening that advancement efforts within the Catholic space seem to be largely unsophisticated compared to secular institutions. Advancement efforts often default to seeking one time cash gifts, with planned giving an afterthought. Fundraising for endowments is huge and can help close the wage gap for teachers in the form of dedicated staff support funds. Sophisticated philanthropy strategies are needed, and part of that is educating clergy and lay-persons alike who operate within Catholic schools. This ties back to the problems of compensation. You need to invest money to hire and retain the best and brightest Catholic advancement staffers across the country. If your approach to these solutions is Moneyball, you aren't ever going to win the World Series. The real black pill is that this is also a ticking time bomb. Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z are not going to have the levels of transferable wealth that Boomers and earlier generations possess. Time is of the essence in terms of capturing the treasure component of the stewardship stool when it comes to our Catholic schools.

🌍 URGENT: Help Transform Lives Across Three Continents We're at a critical moment in our mission to equip village pastors and support vulnerable children across Kenya, South Africa, and South America. The Impact So Far in 2024: • 320 village pastors from 50 churches received biblical training • Over 6,000 believers impacted through equipped leaders • 6,400 meals provided during training • 21 students graduated, ready to transform their communities 🎯 The Challenge: We're facing a $96,000 year-end deficit. The good news? Faithful supporters have already contributed $42,000 (43% of our goal). We need to raise $54,000 by December 31st to: • Continue equipping village pastors across Kenya • Launch new training initiatives in South Africa • Establish programs in South America • Feed and educate children at Word Academy and orphanage Every gift matters. Whether it's $25 or $10,000, you can help transform communities through equipped leadership and educated youth. #TransformationalLeadership #GlobalImpact #NonprofitFundraising #CommunityDevelopment #Education https://lnkd.in/gBxT_M9p

“Catholic schools teach the truth of the resurrection and the need to live a life of reflection and to think critically. Never before in our history has it been more important to ask, what is the truth? This is what Catholic schools challenge students to do each day, and it is in the search of this truth that Catholic schools change lives.” Read more from CSF Executive Director Mike Reardon in his most recent column in The Boston Pilot: https://bit.ly/4flNgPe #wechangelives #csfboston #catholicschool #nonprofit
