UPDATE - from a Down Home organizer in Watauga & Ashe counties: "I can’t even explain to you the work that’s happening. This is once in a lifetime stuff. They are reaching people that firefighters, emergency services haven’t been able to reach, finding ways to areas that haven’t been reached by officials, literally mapping out the county and establishing supply distribution lines that no one has been to yet. I don’t know how we'll tell the story of this... Incredible work is happening here." Rural folks know how to take care of each other. We're meeting needs and saving lives. If you aren't there on the ground, one of the best things you can do is make sure they have the resources they need. When you use this link to support Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, funds are distributed to local, community based, grassroots organizations where they are needed most. Donate now at dhnc.info/HurricaneDonate or at the link in the bio.

Jeff Bezos’ foundation donated $5 million to the Coalition for Homeless in Florida. The coalition is dedicated to providing living necessities to Florida’s most vulnerable population, specifically shelter and providing programs for unhoused people. Trinette Nation, a member of the coalition, told Wesh 2 News reporter Dave McDaniel, "We are in the middle of an affordable housing crisis," and being able to provide these programs and services is huge for this community." This donation comes after an active hurricane season, which left thousands of unhoused Floridians with little shelter and resources. As I respond to text messages checking in to see how we weathered Hurricane Helene and scroll through pictures of downed trees and flooded streets, I find myself thinking about disaster #fundraising. Over the next few weeks, millions will be donated to support those impacted by this storm. People will pull out their credit cards without even thinking. Why? Because of the urgency of the need. People who lose their homes need our help. People with nowhere to go need our help. People trying to figure out what happens next need our help. Urgency. When #donors understand the urgency of the need in front of them, they are more willing to act. The need doesn't have to be a disaster or an emergency for it to be urgent. #majorgifts #donorsnotdollars
