After the past 10 weeks in the Polygence program, I want to share my first independent research project, “Advancing Sex Education and Health Outcomes: The Impacts of Education and Support Programs in Cambodia.” In this paper, I uncovered the realities that many Cambodian female teenagers face regarding their sexual health and lifestyle choices. The findings were more than expected, revealing challenges beyond traditional expectations for these young women. Throughout my literature review, I was deeply moved by the constraints these girls encounter in my home country. Many feel they have limited choices. I believe this is an ongoing problem that needs an urgent solution. This research hasn’t only highlighted these issues but also helped me clarify my passion for empowering women. I am determined to use tech to advocate for social issues, especially for better sex education and support programs that can create positive changes in their lives. How important is Comprehensive Sexuality Education? I remember asking the young girls and teenagers during the sex education outreach I collaborated with the Girl Up Initiative, if they knew any of their peers or friends who were no longer in school because they got pregnant. While I could see the hesitation to answer the question on their faces, I knew I had to convince them it was safe to talk about it and it was infact very important we had that conversation! A lot of yes and positive affirmations rang through the air and it's really so unfortunate that too many young people are left to figure out their sexuality, bodies and emotions alone, often relying on misinformation and being vulnerable to preventable outcomes such as teenage pregnancies, dropping out of school and unsafe abortions. But having access to accurate, age-appropriate sex education is a game-changer. It’s not just about biology, it’s about empowering young people to make informed, healthy choices for their futures. Understanding how the bodies function allows youths to take charge of their reproductive health. Learning about menstruation, contraception, consent, and boundaries builds confidence and ensures they're equipped to protect themselves and plan their futures without fear or confusion. Adolescence and young adulthood come with emotional highs and lows, but knowing how to handle stress, navigate relationships, and seek help when needed makes all the difference. It teaches young people that feeling overwhelmed is normal, and that asking for support is not a weakness but a strength. ✨💡✨ And to my adolescents, teenagers and parents or guardians: It’s okay to have these conversations openly. Young people need to hear that their changing bodies are normal and that their worth is not defined by how they look. These discussions create safe spaces where young people feel empowered rather than ashamed, laying the foundation for healthy self-esteem. Let’s hold the hand of the younger generation and help them figure it all out the right way! All too often we support clients who struggle to connect with their bodies’ cues about what feels good and what does not when engaging sexually. Simple yes-no consent practices don’t adequately navigate the nuances of the real world, and helping our clients find their ‘yes’ so that they can enjoy the sexual and sensual sides of themselves can be challenging, especially for those who have experienced trauma. As therapists, we can sometimes feel at a loss when it comes to exploring nuanced consent with our clients when we don’t have the tools to explore the topic in a meaningful and trauma-informed way.
